It does seems like a really long, setup for that pain joke, but this is Lynn Johnston and that's what she does.
If you were to tell him flat out that given all the things he said about marriage and dating. every human being on the planet would see him as asking permission to go on break
Right. For some reason, Lynn was unable to draw the end of a relationship to be anything other than cheating. Martha can't leave Mike because he is ignoring her and treating her like trash. She has to leave because she wants to pursue another boy. Likewise with Rhetta. In Lynn's mind though, after introducing Jodi and Kit, Rhetta is giving Mike the excuse he needs to pursue Jodi and Kit. Unfortunately for Lynn, she is so slow-moving in her stories, Mike never gets around to Jodi and Kit.
A lot of people on other forums might blame the pain in Mike's jaw for how he treats Rhetta going forward. They forget that when Gord tried getting him back with Martha, the only pain he suffered was bombing his driving test.
Weed always reminded me of Styles, Michael J. Fox's "friend" from Teen Wolf- a "friend" who is far, far more trouble than he's worth who does nothing but cause damage to one's life and is better disposed of. In this strip, he's evidence that Michael has zero personality and zero self-esteem- THIS is the level of BEST FRIEND he's qualified for.
Too bad. Clearly at this point, Lynn has not decided that Weed is Jewish and it might have been fun to discuss his evolution that never appeared in the comic strip

I really need to remember to pick up a couple of things on the way home. We need to get our Christmas cards in the mail (along with a few Hannukah cards, for Weed and Lovey and some of Mike's co-workers), and I need to get a new datebook and some calendars. We're going to put the Christmas tree up

The pain in Mike's face is meant to set up a damn stupid 'joke':

And anyway, the irritating itch she has to make playground 'romance' destiny needed scratching so.........
