The one where Weed is as funny as he is smart.

It is interesting that Michael actually knows that it is a wisdom tooth that is giving him trouble. I am not sure I would have come to the same conclusion. In my day, they took those teeth out pretty automatically when you were 16. I guess John Patterson was not of that sort.

However, the most surprising thing is Weed saying, "Hoo, boy!" These are the only "Hoo"s acknowledged by the comic strip archive search:

However, there can be only one "Hoooo!" boy:

The pain in Mike's face is meant to set up a damn stupid 'joke':

that's a call-forward to Paul being the beau who left too many arrows. In both cases, two people who should have been named Bundy (but unfortunately not dead yet) caterwaul idiotically about being a real person with real feelings because people react in a manner only they didn't anticipate. If you were to tell him flat out that given all the things he said about marriage and dating. every human being on the planet would see him as asking permission to go on break, he would literally not understand you because hoo, boy, he's pumpkin positive and JPS (just plain stupid.)

It does seems like a really long, setup for that pain joke, but this is Lynn Johnston and that's what she does.

If you were to tell him flat out that given all the things he said about marriage and dating. every human being on the planet would see him as asking permission to go on break

Right. For some reason, Lynn was unable to draw the end of a relationship to be anything other than cheating. Martha can't leave Mike because he is ignoring her and treating her like trash. She has to leave because she wants to pursue another boy. Likewise with Rhetta. In Lynn's mind though, after introducing Jodi and Kit, Rhetta is giving Mike the excuse he needs to pursue Jodi and Kit. Unfortunately for Lynn, she is so slow-moving in her stories, Mike never gets around to Jodi and Kit.

And anyway, the irritating itch she has to make playground 'romance' destiny needed scratching so.........

Ultimately nothing happens, so her itch remained unscratched. She has it set up for Jodi and Kit to double-date Mike and Weed, but something changed her mind. Once the spring semester is over, Mike is back to Rhetta as if nothing happened.

She can't have a romance Peter out and die and have people walk away. The divorce law we used to have warped her thinking.

From the Wikipedia

Canada before 1968, the only grounds for divorce were adultery or cruelty. However, in 1968, the Divorce Act was amended to permit divorce for other reasons, including physical and mental cruelty and separation for at least three years. The Divorce Act was amended in 1986 to reduce the separation period to one year, with no requirement to prove "fault" by either spouse. The fault grounds for divorce are also available.

Lynn's divorce from Doug Franks in 1973 would have been one of those before the no-fault divorce. Rod and Lynn got married on February 15, 1975 according to The Comic Art of Lynn Johnston. If Lynn played the "separation for at least three years" card, then she and Doug would have to have separated in 1972, but that would be before Aaron was born. So, this means that she played one of the other cards OR her old story about Doug leaving after Aaron was born was not true. The most likely other card to be played was adultery and that then becomes the reason for all relationships to end in the comic strip.

Also, I remember that Gap-Toothed Smiley Faced "HOO" Guy was something of a folk hero for a while.

I seem to remember someone writing up a whole fake biography of Hoo Boy at one point.

Every stupid cliche Beth coughed up was in that thing. That's why I remember it.

Still funny after all these years. Milborough College of Arts, Technology, and Tractor Pulling made me laugh again.

Same. I also laughed at the dad reflecting that his own father used to beat him senseless on a regular basis, and that he'd come out just fine, except for the occasional blackouts.

That was very Coffee Talk back in the day. There were some shocking comments supporting some of Elly's worst parenting examples.
