Oh Dawn. You realize that you are talking to a girl that has dumped Anthony not once but twice. Not only that, but Elizabeth dumped Anthony so she could chase after a Grade 12 guy, just like what Candace did.
Oh wait. Maybe Dawn does realize that. Unlike Elizabeth, Dawn never actually breaks from Candace. Come January, she is hanging around Candace and doing school projects with her. With this line, Dawn has cleverly slammed both Candace and Elizabeth.
Nevertheless, while Lynn is going for the idea that Candace is a terrible person who took Anthony from Elizabeth and then dumped him the first chance she got, you have to discount the whole idea that Candace went through some trouble to get Anthony. She sacrificed her friendship with Elizabeth. Why would she dump him so quickly?
While Lynn wants us to blame Candace, what she has presented is a guy so terrible that Elizabeth would dump him twice. So, it's not that much of a stretch to imagine that Anthony is the reason, not Candace. We are seeing early hints that Anthony may be truly awful. Later on, he would prove this to be very true.
Remember Candace's understanding of events wherein Anthony seemed to be grimly amused by this. There is something manipulative and weird about him.....and I'm not just talking about his storming off to 'beg' dough-head with Daddy Issues Gord for a job because he stamped his feet on the ground and had a tantrum because Daddy expected him to go halfsies on his first car. A man like him would say that it's a strike against Hawkeye Pierce that he's deliberately kind to those beneath him.
And besides, Dawn remembers that Liz is too Liz to ask for the other person's side of the story. Case in point, Mike's being a shit to Martha because he was so awesome a writer that she didn't want to make herself look bad
(and totally not that her dad ripped up letters she wrote to that skeevy little turd blossom who just wants in her pants):
Despite being told to look beneath the surface:
the Human Doorstop goes to his default position of assuming that she's going to behave the same shitty way he does:
When he's told to pull his head out of his ass:
Liz is too stupid to ask "Does he treat everyone else as poorly as he does me?":
She would go on to not ask "Why should I trust what he says about Therese?"
I'll always believe that Martha's "I was intimidated by Michael's writing skills" was just blowing smoke up Michael's a$$ and instead she just had better things to do than spend her summer replying to endless "this is how amazing I am" missives from a self-absorbed jagoff madly in love with himself.
These ridiculously retrograde catty women are always so quick to judge for their entertainment and benefit, aren't they? Why did Candace dump Anthony? Must be because she's a "witch." Why did Therese have an affair? Must be because she doesn't appreciate a Good Man. Meanwhile, who asks "Liz, why did you leave Paul?" Why is "I got homesick" good enough?
In neither case, could it possibly be that Anthony is unpleasant company. That would mean that mothers do not know:
As we all know, the consensus was that Liz is being not just a catty little twerp here......she's a catty little twerp relying on fifth-hand information from the most biased source I can think of: the ass who's too stupid to realize that imitating Harvey the Wonder Hamster is a real turn-off.
1) Anthony is a manipulator who knows what buttons to push. Elly's button is someone succeeding where she failed.
2) Lynn tried for exotic and came up with "Bucking For A Section Eight."......(but he'll settle for a Section Four and he can take a bus home to Toledo......(
Liz got catty gossip about Anthony's marriage....from her BROTHER. Yeah, because that's what brothers normally would do, instead of, oh, I don't know, living their own damn lives and being totally disinterested in their sister's love life (or if she even has one.)
Am I the outlier here? There is simply no way I would be invested in any of this, and I have two sisters. The idea of feeding information to my sister about the marriage status of an ex-boyfriend...never going to happen. This just comes off as so other-worldly and bizarre to me.
It does seem stupid that Mike would give a hot God-damn what Liz was up to if it didn't directly affect him. Lynn appears to have thought it was her job to lean into Alan's life because she doesn't understand where being a relative begins and being a nuisance ends.
"You don't have to wear a costume to be a witch!"

"There was nothing in his letters to reply to" would have been a completely accurate response to "why didn't you write back?"

Trying to find a meaning in anything he writes is a very difficult thing.
She could tell him to his stupid face that nowhere in his torrent of words was the least bit of information.

I enjoy imagining that she read the letters and thought "what a pretentious twat."

More odd verbal anachronisms. "Phone" is only a verb if you were born in or before the 30's.

At least she didn't use the UK verb 'ring'.

Elly CONSTANTLY criticizes the way her kids dress and eat, though....
Lots of people get piercings and tattoos. I never saw anybody else get their nose made three times bigger.
