I think it helps a lot to look at the comic strip Luann. What used to drive the plot is that Luann and Tiffany were and are functionally identical: deeply insecure young women with the desperate need to be seen as desirable. The person you encountered probably defines herself by her ability to attract male attention.

What I find interesting is not Candace making an own-goal as stupid and thoughtless as the one Liz is making. Candace's hunger to be seen as being able to attract any man only really goes away when one of them is a randy arsewipe who gets in tune with Sailor Moon 'cause the boom anime babes make him think the wrong thing. What's interesting is that Liz is so stupid, she doesn't see the obvious absurdity of this. Then again, most of the reason that Liz didn't warm to Rudy that isn't "not being eye candy"

Why is the question "what is Elizabeth doing here, Rudy?" rather than "what are you doing here, Elizabeth?" Is Eric confusing Liz for Tracey, and assuming she can't speak for herself?

It's so off-putting; he might as well be asking "hey, what's my jacket doing here?"
