I think it helps a lot to look at the comic strip Luann. What used to drive the plot is that Luann and Tiffany were and are functionally identical: deeply insecure young women with the desperate need to be seen as desirable. The person you encountered probably defines herself by her ability to attract male attention.

What I find interesting is not Candace making an own-goal as stupid and thoughtless as the one Liz is making. Candace's hunger to be seen as being able to attract any man only really goes away when one of them is a randy arsewipe who gets in tune with Sailor Moon 'cause the boom anime babes make him think the wrong thing. What's interesting is that Liz is so stupid, she doesn't see the obvious absurdity of this. Then again, most of the reason that Liz didn't warm to Rudy that isn't "not being eye candy"

Why is the question "what is Elizabeth doing here, Rudy?" rather than "what are you doing here, Elizabeth?" Is Eric confusing Liz for Tracey, and assuming she can't speak for herself?
It's so off-putting; he might as well be asking "hey, what's my jacket doing here?"

This odd way of expressing things is rather telling, isn't it? Asking Liz directly what she happens to be doing means something threatening to Lynn: the idea that she has to own what she's doing instead of being a passive victim of unkind fate.

I'm actually surprised that Liz isn't looking at Rudy after the question is asked, as thinking "yeah, Rudy, what am I doing here? Because Little Me Don't Know Me Little."

Lynn carefully wrote Liz in character in the lead-up to her finding out about Tina: people would write back to Liz, warn her and get 'thanked for their concern' because she wanted to see the good in people. She's just a coward who hates to look at obvious things and it's something Candace exploits.

Lynn has seen enough crap Lifetime Movies and Soaps to know that when a guy insists on hearing the words "I trust you," it means he's cheating. I hear the echo in "Wait for me! Promise me you'll wait!" uttered by a man who did NOT wait and has no right to ask anyone to wait.

But Liz is dumb enough to think that this sort of thing can't happen to her because she trusts in faith and fate.

"The bedroom's a mess. How can you find anything?"
Elly said that, is Lynn just using cut and paste?

It was a pretty good indication that even in her college years, Elizabeth was going to turn into Elly. While Lynn was trying to paint Eric as a slob, what she was really doing was painting Elizabeth as a woman who harps on cleanliness with college boys.

Her yelling STOP in a state of blind panic when confronted with kids talking also points that way.
