She also seems to have an obsession with "good clothes", considering some of the crap they wear I have to wonder what her idea of "bad clothes" are. And since when did Michael NOT want Liz to get in trouble??

And why tell the kids not to watch TV? I thought you wanted them out of the way!

1) 'Bad' appears to mean comfortable, stylish and flattering.

2) Mike was put in charge of her so if she gets messy, it's his ass really on the line.

3) Deanna appears to think good children don't really want stimulation.

She's part of the Elly Patterson Cult, so she wants them to stay frozen in place, or is setting them up for failure, or both. At another time they'll nearly kill themselves trying to get to old photographs because they are bored out of their minds and mommy is "too busy" cleaning to give them attention. This family is just gross.

Gross and bloody stupid. It's bleeding moronic to get pissed off at small children because you're too dense to understand that people don't obediently shut down like robots when you stop looking at them but here we are.

That being said, the easiest way to piss Elly or Deanna off is to tell them what kind of kadodie they actually are.

Is that comic strip still in circulation?

There are papers that still carry it.

Also, she has an obsession with Elly blaming Becky for the end results of her stupidity. The example that sticks out like a sore thumb is what happened when Moira fired Kortney. April was told to walk on eggshells because magically, Elly was the only victim:

That was extreme for me. I mean, dad e-mailed me two times at Becky's house, and I was to not say anything about this? I was so freaked by everything. I even thought Kortney would come after me because I kept telling mom what a jerk she was and I didn't trust her. It was so weird to watch Kortney be like this angel when mom was around and be such a demon to us. Mom is like this totally trusting person who sees good in everyone, right? And here is this person who she thinks "just needs friendship and understanding" stealing from the store.

because it was her first time firing someone:

Elly is just a little in shock that Kortney was let go while she was gone. My feeling all along was that it was overdue, but Elly had to work through it, because it is her first firing

Lynn seems to recoil from any kind of unpleasant situation involving the workplace. Michael quits rather than fire someone, and Elly never does fire Kortney but lets it happen while she's away. Liz doesn't quit her teaching job, she just doesn't sign the contract.

This is somebody who clearly let a wall descend between her and the memory of getting fired.

She can't even draw Mike quitting; we just see him tell someone it happened later. Nor do we see Liz actually tell the school she isn't coming back. These things happen off-panel. I think it's a weird mental block for Lynn.

We get to see why when we actually do see an on-camera firing. We know that the people at the library regret having to can Elly because her hobby job is all she's got she's a blessing to be around:

Nobody cares that you dont get to pretend that you contribute to the family's finances, Mrs Rich Dentist. If the job actually paid it should be filled with someone who needs it anyway. There is nothing preventing Elly from just doing it for free except for her ego- she won't do it without a paycheck because Big Girls get paychecks.

I've already covered her refusal to understand how little money the community broadsheet had to work with.

I do appreciate how the ladies at the library realized that they had to fire Elly and couldn't just tell her that they couldn't pay her anymore. They knew Elly well enough that she'd take it as an enormous affront to suggest she do something that is probably done for free in 99 percent of libraries that even bother without any Big Girl Paycheck attached. Getting fired, while humiliating, is at least something that Actual Grown-Ups experience and therefore was palatable to Elly. Just like Elly had to own a business for five minutes so she could talk wistfully of "retirement"- because, again, Retiring is what Actual Grown-Ups do. It's NOT something that SAHMs do, and Elly can't bear the thought of being a SAHM.
