Also, she has an obsession with Elly blaming Becky for the end results of her stupidity. The example that sticks out like a sore thumb is what happened when Moira fired Kortney. April was told to walk on eggshells because magically, Elly was the only victim:
That was extreme for me. I mean, dad e-mailed me two times at Becky's house, and I was to not say anything about this? I was so freaked by everything. I even thought Kortney would come after me because I kept telling mom what a jerk she was and I didn't trust her. It was so weird to watch Kortney be like this angel when mom was around and be such a demon to us. Mom is like this totally trusting person who sees good in everyone, right? And here is this person who she thinks "just needs friendship and understanding" stealing from the store.
because it was her first time firing someone:
Elly is just a little in shock that Kortney was let go while she was gone. My feeling all along was that it was overdue, but Elly had to work through it, because it is her first firing
Being told to just let go of her fear and disappointment because it's not convenient was a garbage move that had a predictable result that the moron who'd go on to assume that Mike and Dee's shit was April's because they were dumped in the same place had a predictable cause: someone who she doesn't like much:
Something about Becky's family politics, something about the type or the lack of discipline rendered our usually reasonable and somewhat compliant child a kid with an "attitude". The clothes she has are not right, now. The style, colors and labels just don't cut it any more.
Lynn seems to recoil from any kind of unpleasant situation involving the workplace. Michael quits rather than fire someone, and Elly never does fire Kortney but lets it happen while she's away. Liz doesn't quit her teaching job, she just doesn't sign the contract.
She can't even draw Mike quitting; we just see him tell someone it happened later. Nor do we see Liz actually tell the school she isn't coming back. These things happen off-panel. I think it's a weird mental block for Lynn.
We get to see why when we actually do see an on-camera firing. We know that the people at the library regret having to can Elly because her hobby job is all she's got she's a blessing to be around:
and they explain the situation in plain English:
but since she's Elly, she assumed that they were lying to someone they only pretended to like:
Nobody cares that you dont get to pretend that you contribute to the family's finances, Mrs Rich Dentist. If the job actually paid it should be filled with someone who needs it anyway. There is nothing preventing Elly from just doing it for free except for her ego- she won't do it without a paycheck because Big Girls get paychecks.
I do appreciate how the ladies at the library realized that they had to fire Elly and couldn't just tell her that they couldn't pay her anymore. They knew Elly well enough that she'd take it as an enormous affront to suggest she do something that is probably done for free in 99 percent of libraries that even bother without any Big Girl Paycheck attached. Getting fired, while humiliating, is at least something that Actual Grown-Ups experience and therefore was palatable to Elly. Just like Elly had to own a business for five minutes so she could talk wistfully of "retirement"- because, again, Retiring is what Actual Grown-Ups do. It's NOT something that SAHMs do, and Elly can't bear the thought of being a SAHM.
Because Stupid Little Girls in their forties like her do the stupid little girl thing of assuming that being around a child will rot her brain.
Even now that Elly is in her seventies, there isn't much difference between her and the six-year old Mike who thought that being around babies is demeaning.
I want to know which jobs Elly is referring to that she has "too much education" for. I want to hear her say "I'd apply for this job, but as a college dropout I am overqualified."
Elly, enough. If you've been working "day and night" on these projects, it's because you are a disorganized idiot, not because the projects are enormous. And as soon as this conversation is over, what are you doing? Shelving books. Which means that anything you "need" to get done by the end of the month is not going to get done because you spent that time on busywork and feeling sorry for yourself.
Lt. Drevin: "Ma'm I promise you this: We are going to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to find your husband's killer. Ok boys, now let's get some lunch."

This is somebody who clearly let a wall descend between her and the memory of getting fired.

She thought she was a victim then too.

The only thing Elly has the business being is a greeter at Sprawl-Mart....but she'd balk at the idea.

The woman blames her children for her bullheaded insistence on churning out her crap when they need her to be their mother.

we KNOW Librarian Who Isn't Sue is up to something, she just complimented Elly's butt ugly 1846 farm woman dress.

Since Elly is stoooopid and useless, she doesn't see anything coming.
