so...
dyeing isn't quite going to plan.
I used the method suggested by
badylugz, but the wool didn't take up all the dye and so it isn't quite the colour i was aiming for and i also feel i don't want to pour the rest of the dye down the drain if there's any way i can still get it into the wool instead!
I do have extra dye powder, but yeah..
but here's photos of the process so far...
1. Soaking the wool... soaked overnight in lukewarm water with wool detergent.... it kinda made me hungry...
2. I mixed up the dye ( a combination of Lansdcape Dye Colours Ice and Kingfisher) in hot water, added cool water and then stirred in the drained wool.
3. After realising the wool was not getting any darker, and trying a number of techniques (including taking the wool out, adding boiling water, stirring wool back in and surrounding that tub with a bathful of hot water) to get the wool to take in more dye i gave up and set about microwaving the wool to set the colour! As you can see the water still has a LOT of dye in it.
4. The colour is not quite what i wanted, although ironically very much like the colour in the magazine i was originally trying to match... however, now i would like it a deeper colour than this. It's also turned out much bluer than the original test swatch, though i'm not sure you can see the true colour definition...
So from here I am waiting on Em's advice, but i think it will either sacrifice a pot and simmer up some of the remaining dye water with the wool, or maybe just rinse the wool, add some hot water to the dye and try again with the soakage? I'm not sure... I don't really want to throw all that unabsorbed dye out though.
I'm also going to have to buy some bleach for the bath tub :D Luckily my landlord lives in Sydney now, so doubt he'll be round in the next few days to inspect!
