You know I LIVE for stuff like this. When a little truth leaks out into the facade of our modern lives. I had no idea until watching the Daily Show last night that some of the Olympic traditions were actually pioneered by the Nazis. Yes folks, that is right. People today carry on the ceremonies started by Hitler many years ago. Funny thing is, I don't remember learning about this in school.
I have to question the wikipedia article on the 1936 Olympics though, because there is a portion of the article dedicated to the United States opposition of the games. It had been my limited understanding that the U.S. was either fine with or mostly ignored the Nazis until the forties. I mean, Time Magazine made Hitler the man of the year in 1939. If people were already opposed to the ideals of the Nazi party three years early, how could that have happened?
I don't really know, so I am curious.
But otherwise, I am laughing my ass off. As if the entire event isn't just ridiculous, to know that some of the major points from which we immediately identify the Olympic games were created by Nazis!?!!? And people have upheld and passed on these traditions... well, that kinda makes them all Nazis, doesn't it. I mean, if anything it states through action that Hitler had some good ideas right?
I mean, can you pick and choose little bits of good out of something totally evil and not question moral implications? Oh wait, people don't HAVE morals anymore, that's right....

The media is just starting up a huge wave of comparison between the 1936 Olympics and the current fiasco over in China. It'll be all the hub-bub for a while before it's all forgotten about again. Either through apathy or if another space shuttle blows up or something.
