Fear the hook!

I decided to go see Smokin' Aces after work today. I would say it's more of a Saturday-afternoon-when-it's-raining-and-it's-on-cable kinda movie. A wannabe 'Kill Bill'. I didn't have much expectations, so I wasn't really let down. Just didn't seem worth the price of admission overall.

I was more interested in two of the trailers I saw. One for a John Cusack/Stephen King movie called 1408 which looked pretty decent. And this new Jim Carrey movie called The Number 23 which looked nothing short of amazing. I really look forward to seeing it when it comes out.

Afterwards, I ran into the Virgin store across the street and picked up Flyboys which came out today. I'd never seen it, but with my penchant for WWII movies, I figured a WWI film about the first American fighter pilots might suit my fancy. It was an okay movie overall. Not sure it was worth the $30 at Virgin Mega-rape for the special edition, but whatever. James Franco was utterly charming in it and I think it was the first role I've seen him in where he seemed comfortable and not like he was pushing his acting at all.

It was loosely based on the true story of the Lafayette Escadrille. The Americans who joined the squadron did so voluntarily, before the United States entered WWI. Flying itself was in it's infancy. An interesting side story to the film was the first African American aviator, Eugene Bullard. In typical United States fashion, 77 years after they rejected his enlistment in the U.S. military he was posthumously commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force.

Jean Reno is in the film as well. I really like that guy.
