Title: Elevator Love Letter.
Author: billpickle
Rating: pg
Pairing: B/B
Word Count: 597.
Spoilers: 5x18's The Predator in the Pool. It's kinda nice being Canadian on Wednesdays. :)
Disclaimer: Show isn't mine. Neither are these two crazy ones. Title comes from the Stars song of the same name.
Summary: It's just that... everytime they're together, it's like they don't know what to say, they don't know how to act and they don't know what to do. Yet still, they ache for that contact with one another because being together is something that, for them, will always be right.

Bones is his standard. Always will be.

He doesn't know why exactly he tells her that, but he does and it's the truth. It's out there now and he can't take it back (not that he would want to or try to, but still... he can't help but think about these sorts of things).

It's just... as of lately... he and her?

They're in this weird sort of head space right now where it feels like they're constantly trying to send messages to each other without actually saying the words. And okay, he's always been subtly flirty with her, but this... this is definitely something different.

I'm jealous.

I don't like the fact that you're going out with someone who isn't me.

I want to kiss you, so so bad.

I … love you.

Yeah.

It's things like that which lead them to this, sort of, state of being that they're currently in. It feels like dating in reverse and there's not a better, more suited way to describe it, other than comfortably uncomfortable.

And it makes all the sense in the world because eventhough he is still him and she is still Bones, that whole werecompletelydifferentbutthatdoesntmeanicanchangethewayifeelaboutyou that's between them can't be ignored anymore. They can't go on pretending that it isn't there-- that they don't both feel it and that it's going to go away because it won't (he won't let it that's for sure, but a part of him likes to think that she won't let it either).

Here's the kicker though. The whole being with her, without being hers? It's kind of bittersweet.

It's just that... everytime they're together, it's like they don't know what to say, they don't know how to act and they don't know what to do. Yet still, they ache for that contact with one another because being together is something that, for them, will always be right. (As for not being together? Well, that's just a whole bunch of levels of wrong, that he doesn't really care to explore.)

So when she says what she says as they wait for the elevator (he's about to go meet with Catherine and she's about to go meet with Hacker):

“Andrew... isn't as handsome as you.”

What he gets out if it is: Bones thinks you're handsome and she's telling you, in that way she has of telling you things, that you're her standard and how that's pretty much the gist.

He lets himself smile a little at that.

Afterall, not being in love with Bones will never truly be an option for him, he's sure. And while he generally tends to be an optimistic type of guy anyway, that whole... isn't as handsome as you thing? Well, that kind of gives him that extra bit of needed hope. For them.

The elevator doors slide open and she tells him that she wants him to have a good time. He smiles, tells her the same while his heart melts a little bit.

There's a half of him that wants to shove his arm into the closing elevator doors; pull her into his chest and say: “I love you. I love everything about you,” while the other half is content to wait.

So he lets her go; feels conflicted when she smiles that smile that's meant for him and he lets the elevator door slide closed.

This is what they need.

There doesn't need to be any pushing of sorts because things will all work out.

Hope, patience, eventually and Bones?

For now, that will just have to be enough.

fin.
