So... I'm watching PleasentVille, which I haven't seen since probably high school. We got to watch it in a sociology class, and I am noticing a lot of symbolisms I hadn't seen when I first watched it. Of course, when we watched it then, we were just looking at the sociological aspects of it; yet, much of the insights I am having have deep sociological impacts, if the time is taken to contemplate such things. But anyways, I digress... kinda... lol
To begin, the main theme I am seeing are the ideas of traditionalism (routine, stability, etc) vs change. It could also be seen as order vs chaos, but those are too abstract so I will continue with the first set.
When the two main characters, , enter PleasentVille, everything becomes monochromatic, which later can be inferred as established by the stability, tradition, I will get to this in a bit. But the monochromism can be seen in many ways. First, that it can represent a state of living death. A place in which nothing ever happens.
And damn it... I had this entire thing typed, but teh net got fucked up and it wouldn't post, so I guess I just get to retype some of the observations I had. But anyways, back to my thoughts!
After a while in PleasentVille, we begin to see colors emerging, the first of which is a red rose. Ironic in my opinion, as I think it being due to two of the characters having sex, but later on, we learn something a little different. The colors emerge when a character begins to take actions they would otherwise not make. For example, the mother masturbating, and then having vibrant colors flooding the bothroom. The next day, you even find out that she herself has is no longer monochromatic.
We can see in that instant something very interesting with the interaction between Toby Maguire and his mom. Hell, for much of the movie you can see this with Toby's character and how he fights for tradtionationalism. Specifically, with this scene, he ends up taking some of his mom's make-up, and applies it to her, so that she appears to be monochromatic. Yet, despite how much Toby, and many other characters in PleasentVille fight against the spread of color, these changes, they only continue to grow.
But anyways... just writting all of this isn't that fun, I'd much rather talk to someone and discuss this, or any number of other topics. So if you're bored, you should IM me!
Peace
