I was going to post one of those "Take the first line of the first sentence of the first post in every month" meme going around, but once I started doing it, it got a little depressing. Mainly because this was the first year where I really started letting the journal go due to work blocking my access to it.
So, a few highlights (and lowlights)...
* Started the year off with my beloved Chargers losing the playoff game to the Patriots. I sat in a gay resort bar in Palm Springs in my Chargers jersey watching the game, and the bartenders took pity on me. I was inconsolable, until I had a few more drinks.
* Got to revisit a piece of my youth by catching my 13-year-old self on Card Sharks. Man, I had BIG hair. Humbling and more than a little creepy.
* Before January was through, I had an emergency appendectomy that I can truly say was one of the scariest experiences of my life, in that it came on so suddenly, hurt more than anything I can remember, and had to be on some serious drugs to get through it. It also was a slight godsend, because it allowed me to meet my insurance out of pocket before the really big health thing happened in August.
* February brought a return to health, IBR was a blast. March brought my 34th birthday, and the beginning of our softball season. We would end up going 10-5 and taking 5th place on the season, and 4th in the playoffs, just barely missing our chance at the World Series (not that, given what happened in August, I would have been able to go. LOL).
* May and June flew by with softball, and July brought Fred and I to Provincetown, MA, for one of the best vacations we've ever had.
* August brought another super-fun Lazy Bear, our first not camping with the gang, and while we missed the camaraderie, we still had a great time (and saved a ton of money)!
* Speaking of saving money, in August I managed to become completely debt-free by paying off the last of my credit cards, which had served as my "student loans". I've actually been able to do a little more saving since then.
* And while up to that point, the year had gone really well, late August brought on the worst injury I've ever had, on the softball field, when I stepped into an errant gopher hole in the outfield. I went one way, my right ankle went the other. After September, the month known to me mostly as "a month of xrays and tests and second opinions" (Oh, and Folsom!), the diagnosis was 2 torn ligaments and a split tendon. Prognosis: surgery. With the appendectomy behind me, the surgery and all costs in 2007 were covered completely, which helped to keep me out of debt.
* Surgery in October, and the following (ongoing) rehabilitation in November and December really took away a chunk of the year for me, and has at times made me look at 2007 as "Worst. Year. Ever!" but really, aside from the challenging injury, it's been a pretty good year, with continued employment, continued lovin' from Fred and friends, and more good times on their way in 2008.
So, my Top 10 "To do's in 2008":
1) Dance at IBR.
2) Dance to Paco's set at Bearcelona in Barcelona.
3) Make good on the progress I made in 2007, pre-injury, of going back to the gym. With softball being out of the question until late 2008, but more than likely 2009), I need to redirect some physical energy and get some of these muscles I hear the kids talking about.
4) Walk better.
5) Run, or lightly jog (but first, #4).
6) Spend more time with friends to make up for the time I spent largely hidden away at the end of the year.
7) Blog more.
8) Keep career hunting and believing that there is a job out there made for my strengths and passions.
9) More trips to the River.
10) Create a will (it's a good thing to have).
I can accomplish all of these with a lot of work, and I am more then willing to put in the work!
For those of you I don't run into tonight, I wish you all a safe and wonderful New Year!
