Uh, that scene in Fresh Blood with Dean all "what rhymes with shut up" and Sam all "Just 'coz"? I almost cried watching it. I absolutely love it when Sam can break Dean, can be his little brother. Then it got me thinking about their relationship itself, and my thoughts spiraled out of control until I had to write them down to make sense of it.

I would think that the reason Dean loves his jacket, music, and car is because, deep inside, he wants to be Sam's father, wants to fulfill the role that John should have filled.

To call Dean just Sam's brother is woefully inadequate and doesn't even begin to explain what motivates Dean to do what he does…

I so agree with you about everything...
I mean, all our fics, our squeeing, our love for the boys.. I think everything can be brought back to what you just said.
Because the boys aren't just brothers, are so much more than that and I firmly believe that the reason why we tend to ship them is because we feel that their love is so bigger then the love two brothers share, sometimes I think it's even bigger than the one lovers share...
Dean wants to be Sam's borther, father, friend, lover, wants to be Sam's everything!

I don't know if that makes any sense to you but still....

I should have made this my listening music, but when you said "Dean wants to be Sam's brother, father, friend, lover", I thought of this song.

And you make total sense, I especially like what you said about what they have being more than lovers share. Very, very true.

I actually teared up while reading this. Especially the whole thing about Mystery Spot, and how you pointed out that when Sam lost Dean, he lost not just his brother, but his father, his mother, his friend, his everything. Meep. ;__; And Dean so willingly and faithfully embraces these roles because he loves Sam more than anything.

Heh, I put that line in for the lolz. And the scene where Dean is telling him that nothing bad was going to happen to him, changing his order to sausage? Visual representation of the big brother and mother role. He's so soothing and yet firm and sure. You can see Sam believing him, trusting him. ♥
