Right, so it's about this Roman guy named Marcus, who hates his entire fucking life because his dad was in the army and died in Scotland and lost the Eagle there (gold emblem thingy; it's a big deal, okay?) and then a chariot falls on Marcus and he gets invalided out of the army and is SAAAAD. Then he ends up with Esca, a British slave who HATES THE FUCK OUT OF HIM. But slowly they grow into frenemies (and also Esca has to HOLD HIM DOWN and it is awesome) and one day Marcus decides that, hey, he could go look for the Eagle himself. In Scotland. With Esca.
This is both a good and bad idea. Good because Esca keeps Marcus alive because Marcus is kind of a dumbass. Bad because Esca is deliberately lying about everything he knows because, oh, yeah, HATES THE FUCK OUT OF HIM. And loves him at the same time. You know.
And then they get captured by the people who have the Eagle. And then Marcus is *Esca*'s slave and Esca makes him kneel and and it is fucking awesome. Except he thinks Esca has really betrayed him. And then, eventually, when everyone's passed out after a feast, Esca wakes Marcus up and basically says, okay, come on come on, they're all asleep, we gotta go get the Eagle now.
And what do you think Marcus does? Do you think he goes, "Yeah, okay, let's go finally get this thing I've been wanting for years?" Well, that would make sense, wouldn't it.
No, he looks at Esca and says, "I thought I'd lost you."
*insert squee here* (And in an unfilmed scripted version, Esca replies, "While I have honor left to lose, you will not lose me.")
And then eventually everything goes well (and there is an awesome moment where you just swear they were about to kiss) and everyone is happy and Esca isn't a slave anymore and they walk off together smiling. (And in an alternate ending, they buy a horse farm in Spain. Really.)
I can provide pics and vids and source and ANYTHING, but I assure you that this fandom is COMPLETELY GAY.

There's a woman in one scene, I think -- enslaved Marcus is staring at one of the Celt women and the chief's son is like "WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT MY SISTER?" and Esca grabs Marcus and shoves him to his knees and pulls his head back to bare his throat and is like "HERE YOU CAN TOTALLY KILL HIM" and it looks like this and it's pretty great.
But, yeah, that's the only scene with a woman in it, really, and she doesn't say anything. No women have speaking parts.
In the book it's based off (which is also incredibly slashy in a very very different way -- more friends, less frenemies -- and if, you, um, might need a copy...) Marcus does have a love interest, but they decided that she would be confusing for the movie and that this should really just be about Marcus and Esca. And it is. (The actors describe the movie as a bromance, and also as "Brokeback Eagle." If you like that sort of thing.)
There are also a lot of awesome things if you like very h/c moments, because they spend a lot of time huddling miserably together in the cold and rain and so on. Also there are vows and oaths and debts of honor and eeee.
It's not the best movie in the entire world, but it is really surprisingly fun. And slashy in the classic classic old-school way.
Also another awesome thing is Esca's hipbones, and I say this as a lesbian. Apparently I'd hit it.
Also the fandom's writing a lot of modern AUs, so you don't have to like the period, even though I do.

THOSE HIPBONES. I have a weakness for male hipbones. I suppose the equivalent for girls are curvy hips and since I'm not strictly straight (who is, honestly?) I like a girl with meat on her bones.

Recs... hmm. carmarthen has some recs here (she recs non-WIP non-AUs), and misspamela has some recs here and here. And you have to read the original shooting script (Cottia's in it, but there's still no het; she's ten years old).I would rec anything by carmarthen, linaerys, savvierthanu, aleathiel, frackin_sweet, and ainsoph15; my particular biases are historical accuracy in non-AUs and toppy, toppy Esca. Mmmm.
The main comm is ninth_eagle and the kink meme is the_eagle_kink (round one has just closed to new prompts, but old stuff is being filled; new post should be up soon). If you want any Eagle fen on your flist I can recommend some fun people.
I've got a couple stories posted; the thing that's currently eating my brain is an epic AU in which Marcus never left the army, Esca was never a slave and joins the army, and eventually becomes Marcus' second-in-command. Also at some point they fall in love.

And, ha, I didn't even notice that moment. But man, I've been watching the .gif of Marcus going to his knees a lot on repeat. Because yes.
Aww, thanks. (I'm really enjoying the Trek fic you've been posting lately as well. Any chance of writing some Marcus/Esca too? They're fun!) And, man, this story is killing me to finish. I'm at ~20,000 words and maybe a third of the way through. Grr argh.
