I don't consider other novels canon, but I am thrilled with the fact that it's used in another romantic context. Further proof that all roads lead to slash!

And you know, that's a good point with the 'straight until prove otherwise'. When I was in the in the late 80s/early 90s, I had little to no idea what homosexuality was and it never occurred to me until I was a preteen that two guys could possibly be together like that without attaching a thousand stereotypes, and I had the internet at that revelation. The only audience Roddenberry was really responding to was the underground collection of slash fans while most everyone else couldn't see K/S if they made out right in front of them.

Link me to your footnote fic? I would love to see it!

Oh, the Enterprise thing so bothers me as much as the 'Kirk is a total manwhore and playboy' thing, without even considering that he could be bisexual. I don't know if you saw it, but there was a special on the captains of the Enterprise on the Biography channel a bit back and one of the people who worked on the show actually said, "You could consider Spock the love of his life (not just the Enterprise" and it annoyed me when they immediately added, "but not in a gay way." Really, would it be SO BAD if it were in a "gay way?" Can't a love story be a love story regardless of gender?

I hadn't even realized how strong a Vulcan bond could be until this novel and I was like, "really, Roddenberry? How are we NOT supposed to raise our eyebrows at this?" Then I looked up the distance between Earth and Vulcan and was further blown away. I mean, it would take any of us 16 years at light speed to get across that distance and we can't even go light speed at the moment, so we're talking decades. Oh god, the following song just popped into my head.

I love when people who know nothing about K/S can find little to evidence for Spock/Uhura. I still remember my sister's face as she watched the reboot movie for the first time and she was all confused and asking it this was in the original series because it came out of nowhere, and that coming from a girl who lives on het romance in the form of the Lifetime network.

Me neither - just pointing out that it is used outside of the TMP novelisation. I wish we could've heard it onscreen at least once, though.

Oh, don't even get me started. *Sighs heavily*

Thank you! And hey, we can still hope they'll say it in reboot. Oh god, the amount of FANGIRL SCREAMING I would unleash in the theater would be insane.

We can only hope. :) On another note, we seem to be on the same wavelength - mind if I friend?
