Criticism abounds, not for the gleeful

This episode is weird. I don't hate it, yet I don't like it either. I think it's because the win column is short and the wtf column is overshadowing it.

1. They killed Jo, but also killed Ellen. I do like how they treated their deaths, and damn, Ellen made me almost cry. I never liked Jo, but how can you hate a girl who passes up sleeping with Dean because she wants self-respect and then quite bravely sacrifices herself? However, I was annoyed that suddenly is trying to hit on her before they die and then acts like he's lost the love of his life. I was pleased when Dean went for a forehead kiss, but then it of course went to more. I think I'll just say to myself that he was giving her what she wanted in life or something. Then there's also the "huh" factor of their deaths. I mean, they randomly have Jo and Ellen there to die, and I wish there was a little more build up, you know? I'm going to start anticipating that if hunters/characters from the past show up, they will be ganked.

2. The episode was written almost like it was a season finale, which was exciting in a way, but it of course lacked the build up and then it ended so lamely. That was the most yawn-worthy ending ever, there wasn't even the traditional cliffhanger. First I thought it would end with "hello, Death", because that would be lame, but at least they tried honestly to be dramatic and make you wonder what Death is like for two months, but then they just...cut to deaths being reported on tv and they burn the picture they all took. Why did they burn the picture? What was the point of taking it in the first place? It was taken to remember if someone died, so now we get rid of it? I smell contrived...drama? You can't even call it a proper metaphor or fucking foreshadowing. It was taken so we could see it dramatically burn at the end, and that's just not reality, people. When people die, you keep what's left of them, not burn it.

3. Castiel kicked some ass, and I loved the reveal that he would be public enemy #1 if Lucifer is out of the picture. And then using Meg as a bridge, ROFL.

4. I hate the new actress for Meg SFM. She doesn't emulate or even try to act like Meg at all. Jared played a better Meg than she does. This show should learn not to get different actresses to play the same role (like the atrocity that was Ruby 2.0. FML) Also, I thought YED was her father, as said by possessed!John in season one? Whatever, I guess Lucifer is everyone's pimp daddy.

5. Speaking of Lucifer, I'm half and half on him. On the one hand, I laughed a lot with the "OWWWW" after Sam shot him. It about echoed how I felt about them trying the stupid Colt, more on that in the next comment. They're making a little too easy for us, however. Obviously it will come down to the demons rebelling against Lucifer or something, because Crowley saying Lucifer thought nothing of demons, Meg saying that Lucifier loves all the little demons of the world, and Lucifer going, "what? they're just demons." Ow, Edlund, the anvils you're throwing are hurting like a bitch.

6. Sam and Dean. They were, like, secondary characters in this episode and that's not right. There were two things that annoyed me to no end. The first is that they were relegated to being dumbfucks again for this episode. First they lamely try to do a devil's trap on a CARPET. They could have at least gone for a ceiling or do what they did several times in the past and make TWO, trying to lure Crowley into the second. Then Sam tries to shoot Crowley, fail. What made him think the demon would keep the gun loaded? Then they try to kill Lucifer with the Colt, and they don't even TRY to have some sort of backup plan. I'm not a hunter, but even my stupid self understands that the most powerful being ever, one that is essentially an ANGEL, will not be easily be killed by a demon-killing gun, especially when this is the creator of the demons. And my other gripe? That fucking lame ass last words comment by Sam. "I'm good," Dean responds. Really, Edlund? That's how you want to write it? "I'm good?" That just sounds like you didn't know what the fuck to say yourself. Hey boys? YOU'RE ABOUT TO TRY TO KILL LUCIFER. How about a hug? Or a, "hey, love you bro," or, even better, have Dean slip a little, "I'm proud of you" or something to bolster Sam's decision not to be Lucifer's vessel? God, even a flippant, "jerk/bitch" would have sufficed!

In short, it was just okay. It was adequate. It could have been a lot better. Even though season five is exceeding my expectations, as season four pretty much killed them, this show just hasn't been able to surprise me in a big way. The most surprised I've been this season is when Demian andBarnes were a couple. I miss when this show made me go, OMGWTFBBQ!!! I mean, shit, John dying, end of Nightshifter, Dean giving up his soul, even season four had a few surprises, like Mary being a hunter herself and that creepy ass girl not being a ghost but a human. This season is just a whole lot of "mmm hmm, knew that, yep, guessed that, no shit, Sherlock.".
