Not too much going on, I've kind of been stuck in limbo while I wait to hear on the position at work (yes... I'm still waiting. They still have more first-round interviews to do).
Reading: I finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It was pretty darn good. I'd say it was very close to the movie. I wish the movie had Neville in as many scenes as the book did. I also prefer the way the Norbert thing happened in the book. On the flip side, I preferred the zoo scene in the movie over the way it played out in the book, though. I'm also almost half way through The Ghost in the Mirror. I'll reach half way or go over a bit when I read in bed tonight. There have been a couple of things now in the book that I remember from before but for the most part I dont remember this book as much as I did the first 3. I can definitely tell the difference in writing, since another author finished this book since Bellairs passed away before it was done.
Last weekend I went on a very nature-ly hike with Todd and Henry. We decided to go up to Mt Laguna since we hadn't been in a while. The temp was only in the 40's and up at 6,000 feet there was still a good deal of snow on the ground. It wouldn't have been bad at all if it hadn't been so windy! It was totally clear and the sun was shining beautifully. I was the only one that wore pants and I had also brought a light flannel. We started out on a short ~1mi trail called the Oasis Springs Trail. I found a very new-looking pedomiter, a Mio Trace, in the snow and picked it up. No one was in site. We then drove to the campground near Little Laguna Lake and began our hike past that and on to Big Laguna Lake, all the way around that and back to the campground again. That was about 3.5 miles. I used my GPS app on my phone again, it's really a great app. Tracks you via gps and maps where you went, also keeps track of: moving time, total time, max speed, avg speed, avg moving speed, elevation climb, min elevation and max elevation. I can export it and upload to a site to track and publish it, and can also import into Google Earth.
I've been watching Warehouse 13 on Netflix too. I think I mentioned discovering it in a post a while back. I finally started watcing from the beginning and have been through 7 episodes. I love all the steampunk gadgetry. In fact, I was able to find the guy who created the amazing keyboard that Arty uses. He's over at www.datamancer.net Really AMAZING work. The beginning is not what I expected but it's good. I cant wait for it to pick up and be more developed like the 2 or 3 episodes I saw when I discovered it.
Today I did something kind of fun. I decided to finally install Windows 95 in a virtual machine! I found my old copy of Win95 on my old backup hard drive. It took some finagling but I got it setup and working! Just another example of me indulging in my nostalgia. It has Internet Explorer 4.0 and I even got the internet working in it. Granted, that version of the browser can't do all the .NET, PHP, Flash, Silverlight, and other new technologies. But if a page is rendered in basic HTML it can load it just fine. Now I need to find some old software to load up in there. I used to have a copy of the old Encarta but I think I threw it away a couple of years ago or so when I foolishly decided to junk a bunch of old CDs like Microsoft Works 4.0. I'm sure I can find them on the net. I've got a bid in on an original copy of Windows 98SE. Had the original Win98 way back when but not sure what happened to the CD. I still have the booklet...
Hoping the next time I post I have good news about a job!
