Random

I've kept silent on the subject for far too long. I'm speaking of course about the use of the word "random." It's a fine word for the most part. At least, it was fine before people started using it to explain or identify something they felt was out of place. Granted, this abuse of "random" isn't the most agregious of vernacular word misuse. (I'd say that title still belongs to the horrifying way "literally" is raped on a daily basis.) Still, let's talk about it a bit.

"Random" means without a pattern like random number generation in lotteries and keno and D&D. I seldom hear it used properly anymore, though. I hear most often "That was random!" A declaritive statement that doesn't mean anything. It's used by morons and children and moron/children to express how something was non-sequitur. Now, sure, saying "That was completely fucking non-sequitur!" doesn't roll off the tongue and would also make you sound like an asshole. I'm working on an alternative. Solutions are my business, you see.

Anyway, it's used also by people lacking a sense of humor in an attempt to sound clever or "ironic" (yet another word these people use incorrectly). To these folks "handkerchief salad buttsex" is random. There is a certain amount of humor in the phrase "handkerchief salad buttsex," true; but I don't want to give these smug motherfuckers the satisfaction of the admission.

I am not cut out for research papers. The subject for my English 251 research paper is Leonard Cohen and I STILL can't muster the drive to get it done. I fancy myself a writer, but I'm a lazy writer. Non-fiction is my preferred macrogenre, but I shy away from the researched/peer-reviewed/journalistic/honest/objective stuff in favor of a subjective reporting of personal events or observations. I have waited far to long to complete this thing and it's GOT to be done tomorrow and I have yet to type one sentence. I'm writing on this thing instead. Eff.

This paper could ruin my 4.0 this quarter and I'm irritated with it enough to be alright with that. I'm ashamed. Here's to inspiration and motivation.
