Unbound: Auld Mortality

I just finished listening to the first Unbound audio, "Auld Mortality" this morning.

About halfway through, I thought, "Wow, why is this making no sense at all, and yet being strangely compelling? Oh yeah, Marc Platt wrote this. Par for the course."

Overall, I enjoyed this, but I felt like I was really missing something plot-wise.

The big thing is that I really don't understand Quences's motivation. Why does he want a president in the family so badly? And why go through this whole complex scheme to keep the Doctor on Gallifrey and make him president? (I mean, let's face it, brilliant the Doctor may be, but he's hardly a politician.) I just felt like I really couldn't get as bothered as I should have been about the whole prospect of Quences winning, because aside from the fact that he's an unpleasant and creepy person, I didn't see why it would be so horrible for him to get what he wanted.

On the other hand, I got chills during the scene with the Doctor and Susan in the possibility tree, and again during the scene at the end, where the Doctor asks Susan to leave Gallifrey with him, and we hear two overlapping possibilities - one where she says yes, and one where she says no - play out. Great stuff.

And Hannibal invading the Panopticon with elephants = pure win.

Not my favorite Big Finish audio, but definitely compelling. I'm looking forward to listening to it again at some point - I suspect it will repay repeat listens. I'd love to hear what others thought of it.
