Yay, it's 2014. And so far it's looking to be a pretty crappy year.
The past two weeks, not counting the current ones, have been "interesting".
The weather/Snowpocolypse 2014
Three Wednesdays ago, we had about 4-5" of snow. Not a big deal for the area. But then three Sundays ago we received another 10-12" on top of that with little melt. Because of this, schools were closed and roads were terrible.
I had an appointment to go to see a University of Michigan (Dearborn campus) advisor on that Tuesday but was only able to get about 5 miles down the road... the roads were so ice-covered that even the highways were 25mph average. I turned around part way, which was good because the UM-D was closed anyway.
Also, that Tuesday the temps dropped to -15F at night, with a windchill of nearly -40... the coldest temps we've ever seen. A polar bear vortex. It was cold but I bundled up and bared it.
It became warmer, which caused some roads to melt and freeze and turn to ice, which made it hard to drive (and I got stuck on some icy roads at times). Lately it's gotten bitterly cold again with nighttime temps in the negatives. Yay.
Car Repair
Before the -15F temps my window regulator on the driver's side, the thing that makes my window go up and down, broke. So I had to push the window up and down manually until I could fix it. Not a good thing when you deliver papers by car for a living. I ended up either using the passenger window, opening the door instead, and leaving the window half down when I needed it open. And then I had to fix it during the day when it was cold outside.
And then, not this past week, but the week before, my car broke down. The throttle cable broke, and it was a dealer-only part, and the part had to be ordered. So I was without a car for a few days.
Just so happens my rescheduled appointment at the UM-D was when my car broke down, so I had to reschedule it again. Fun!
Classes/school
So I ended up rescheduling my advising appointment twice at the U of M Dearborn, and finally made it (a bit late) the third time around. Now that I had the appointment I'm debating whether I want to go there or not, because the advisor used the word "no" too much when I asked her about things, like online classes and dual enrollment and stuff (which apparently they don't do). But it was certainly too late to register for winter semester, all thanks to the weather and my car breaking down.
I was also interested in taking a robotics class at my old school. I'd have to pay out of pocket but was willing. But it had the oddest requirement of needing a notebook computer for class, and I was unable to find one in time due to the weather and car problems. So I had to skip that class as well, which is very disappointing.
