Seattle

I just returned for five days in Seattle. It was great.

Wednesday: Flew in. We had a connecting flight in Phoenix and due to Southwest's first- come, first served policy we didn't get to sit together. Kim asked two people if they would trade seats but they both refused. Finally she moved to a seat neat mine. When the gentleman next to her heard we were together he volunteered to trade seats. Finally a nice person! We gave him a book of drink coupons which turned out to be a nice gift since I saw the flight attendant brought him a cocktail. We arrive without incident. Dad picked us up and Kim & I had dinner with Mom, Dad, and Grandma. Stayed at Grandma's house.

Thursday: Drove to Anacortes and took the ferry to Victoria, B.C. Went to Buchart gardens. Walked around and saw the city. I had our hotel confused and tried to check into the wrong one. Although the one we did stay at was nice. We had high tea at the Fairmont Empress, which was quite an experience. We made dad the tea master which meant he had to pour all the tea. He in turn required that all requests for tea be made politely or your tea cup would remain empty. They served sandwiches and pastries which destroyed our appetite for dinner. The best sandwich was carrot, ginger, cream cheese, and brown sugar.

Friday: Had breakfast at the hotel, checked out. Dad walked around and visited the parliament building. Played Tichu all the way on the ferry back. Mom and I beat Dad and Kim. We got back to Grandma's house and relaxed for a while. Kim, Grandma, and I played a game of Scrabble. Kim trounced us. Then Kim took us all to dinner and Antonio's, a really nice seafood place on the harbor. We got to see the sunset and had yummy fresh fish.

Saturday: After breakfast and a lazy morning Kim and I drove to mom's bookstore. I took a wrong turn and we toured the University District a bit. We were going to eat at an Afgan place but it was closed so we went to a Thai place. They had hoisen sauce on the Summer Rolls which was interesting but I felt got in the way of the peanut sauce. We drove back to Grandma's house to visit Don, Jeanette, and family. They left and around 6pm my family and Randy & Susan showed up for the May birthday extravaganza. We had dinner (featuring veggie and traditional lasagna) and dessert (3 cakes). Yummy.

Sunday: We packed up and mom picked us up to go to the airport. We walked around a little piece of Pike's Market. We decided to buy two large Dungeoness crabs, a loaf of French bread, some petit fores and eat it in the park. It was fantastic. Mom took us to the airport. We were running late and the line was long so we checked in with a surly porter on the curb. The line to go through security was also long and they scanned my backpack twice but we made it to the gate in plenty of time. I asked to preboard because I am recovering from surgery. They didn't give me a hard time about it. My first instinct was to ask to preboard so that Kim and I could sit next to each other but I don't think that would have gone over well. We connected in Albequerque and ended up sitting next to a professor who teaches quantum physics. I wanted to ask him some questions (because I have a very hard time believing much of quantum physics) but I decided to keep the conversation lighter. We had a stop in El Paso and Kim & I played Gin back to San Antonio (she won two games straight).
