I'm convinced that McCain's campaign is resorting to a lot of things - they've tried to place themselves as the "American" choice for President, and therefore the default choice when people realise that Obama is "a black man that doesn't know his place" (all the stuff about the "celebrity" and "messiah" ads have been on this theme).
I think that McCain's campaign are realising that they don't get in the news if they don't say anything bad about Obama, as Obama's the complete narrative this election, and McCain presenting his own ideas without criticising Obama is dull and not newsworthy.
I think you might very well be right. Wow. It's well known that the right wing uses slick Madison Ave. techniques in their campaigns. And subliminal manipulation is one of their best tools.
