Texas Forever

It's so, so hard to stick the landing and create a truly satisfying series finale, but I watched the FNL finale tonight, and I think they succeeded marvellously. I laughed, I cried, I cheered. Bravo, show. Bravo. I'm going to miss you, Dillon.

My favourite moments of the finale in picture form.

Eric and Tami bicker.

Julie tries to ignore them and stay out of the middle.

Awwwww, Matt proposes outside the Alamo Freeze. BLESS. And lovely use of the Brandi Carlile cover of "Heaven."

Landry! Love him laughing his ass off at Matt. Wish we'd seen more of him.

Coach laughing his ass off at Matt...

...until he realizes Matt is serious about marrying Julie. (Yeah, they're way too young, but awwwww.)

Tami gets choked up when she sees Julie's ring. So perfect that it was Grandma's.

Coach telling Tim to damn well call him if he needs anything. SNIFF!

Tim holding a baby (!!) and telling Becky they're family. That girl super grew on me this season.

Tami telling Eric she gives up, because she knows she won't win. :((( Connie Britton, how so amazing?

Awwwww, Mindy. I really enjoyed her and Billy this season. So nice to see minor characters get a chance to shine. The Mindy/Becky relationship was great.

Old friends! I wish Landry had been there, or that there'd been a Landry/Tyra scene.

Coach telling Jess that he'll put in a good word for her in Dallas. *draws hearts*

Grandma! One of the greatest tertiary characters ever, Y/Y?

Vince and Jess. Be more awesome, you two. I dare you. (Sadness that they're living apart now! Er, not that they're real people or anything.)

Tyra and Tim, and to their dreams converging one day.

"Please take me with you to Philadelphia." I really never had a doubt this is the way it would go, but it was still awesome seeing it unfold.

State! IT'S OKAY, TINKER. BREATHE. (And he's a Panther now! Yay!)

Buddy Garrity, playing every point with them from the sidelines. I love you, Buddy. He could be so annoying at times, but Buddy Garrity is a good man to have in your corner.

It's all on you, Vince! YOU CAN DO IT! Throw for touchdown, bb.

Loved, loved, loved everyone watching the ball as it sailed over the field. And then...

STATE CHAMPIONS! :D :D :D Nice way of doing it without repeating the end of S1. And Vince, Tinker and the others are Panthers, and I liked that the coaches made the "super team" too. I never hated the Panthers, and in a way it feels right to end with them being Dillon's team again.

BRB, SOBBING.

The one true surprise of the episode. My first reaction was NOOOOOOOO! But it really works for the character. Luke will make a fantastic soldier. And he will come home safely. (I know, he's not real, he's not real...)

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww x infinity. I never hardcore shipped them, but I think it's lovely that they're together.

:D :D :D YAY. Go, Jess.

Texas forever.

And a new life in Philly. Yes, Eric, they have football there.

Sigh. FNL wasn't perfect, and I've had my quibbles over the years. (JD becoming a one-note douche and then disappearing, Santiago disappearing, never following up on the gay coach story, Hastings never being developed this season, and so on.) But they really are quibbles. At its worst, FNL was 897248937489358 better than just about anything on TV. Thank you, DirecTV for saving it. Sometimes, quality actually does win out.

Clear eyes, full hearts. (We'll work on the rest.)

fangirl alert!, fnl
