So, the new year is here. I generally don't go in for resolutions, but this year I decided that it was about time I started giving to those less fortunate on a regular basis. When I donated to Doctors Without Borders last week, I noticed that they had an option for monthly giving. My knee-jerk reaction was that I can't afford that, and I clicked ( Read more... )

I like how you put that, how you put into words everything that donating is. It was very cool of you to do so. A while back I had done one of those adoption overseas things, well I was seriously thinking about it. At the time something had come up, but now reading this makes me want to do it again. We really are a selfish bunch, aren't we?

Go for it! You won't regret it. :) And thanks.

I've been doing the same thing for a few years, and I promise, it keeps feeling good :-) It also helps the charities plan their budgets, since they don't have to wait for the year end to see how much people will donate. The only thing is that you can't afford to give as much when something like this happens.

Also, since you're Canadian, canadahelps.org is a site that lets you put together a portfolio of charities, and tracks your donations (which can be guilt inducing) and organizes your tax receipts (which I like because I'm lazy).

Yeah, and then they don't have to wait for a big world disaster, but will have a regular stream of income.

Thanks for the info on canadahelps!

I think that is wonderful. Up until the beginning of this year, I always made monthly payments to the children's AIDs fund. Unfortunately, I really can't afford it right now, but I just sent in an application to volunteer with the western NC AIDs project. Sometimes it's a little painful to realize that in our own ways we are selfish when it didn't even cross our minds before. The fact that you want to help and are doing everything you can to help is great. It really does feel good to know that you are helping someone out there, even if you have to pass by a fabulous pair of shoes.

Sigh. Okay, you went and talked me into it.

I blame your BNF powers of mind control.

You rock! I tend to buy annual memberships to lots of different organizations (mostly animal/environment-related, I confess), but I liked what I read about DWB when I made my one-time donation, so I'm going to go look into that monthly thing, 'cuz it sounds like a great idea.

I totally think it's a great idea. juliedarling told me that she checked the U.S. site to see if there was a monthly option, but she couldn't find one, so she just signed up at the Canadian site. It's all the same organization anyway.

And *you* rock! You support so many worthy causes. :)
