Another Saturday Night...
Good evening!
First, a belated happy birthday to i_heart_my_geek. Hopefully she had a nice day, and the Rent movie will be a good, nice late present for her.
(Speaking of birthdays...seven more days till mine. I expect everyone to remember it, even if I won't.)
I think I'll randomly mention a song of the day. This could be based upon something that goes along with my day or a current event or whatnot, but it'll usually just be random. I'm sure it'll go the way of the defintions or questions of the day or whatever the hell else I put in here, but we'll see.
Today's song of the day is "Mental Hopscotch" by Missing Persons, a marvelous early '80s new wave band. I only knew three songs by them (including "Words," their biggest hit with a beautifully tacky, early '80s video), but stumbled upon them by accident a few weeks ago. I was looking for a song, thought they might have sang it, and clicked on a bunch of their song clips on ITunes. Turns out that the song was actually by Berlin ("The Metro"), but I did like the clips I heard, and decided to buy a hits album. Money well invested; "Mental Hopscotch" is a standout, complete with that insane loud and quick bit towards the end, but "Window" is sweet and their cover of The Doors' "Hello I Love You" is delightfully trippy. It turns to shit by the end, though, as on their last album, they tried to fit in with mid-'80s techno pop bands like the Eurythmics and Information Society, and just really weren't that remarkable. Still, the early tracks have a spark and excitement that can only be found in glorious new wave music.
Speaking of their Doors cover, I wish I could start some sort of bureau devoted to approving song covers. If the cover does something unique with the original, or puts a lot of heart into making it something special, or just plain sounds good, it would be approved. The aforementioned Missing Persons song, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" by Nirvana, "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix and William Shatner's excellent version of Pulp's "Common People" would be approved. Meanwhile, I'd relish turning down that version of "The Man Who Sold The World" by the lady from the INXS reality show (that they keep playing at work just to annoy me), or Limp Bizkit for turning the Who's magnificent "Behind Blue Eyes" (one of my all-time favourite songs) into substandard nu metal triple. C'mon, Fred, a fucking SEE AND SAY?!! It was wise of them not to even try the build at the end, though. I heard they recently took on The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony"; I'll have to hear this to believe it.
I'd also practically imprison 311 for their god-awful disintegration (pun intended) of The Cure's "Love Song." I'd also nix anything recent from Rod Stewart. I quite like Rod's music from the '70s and '80s, but once he butchered "What a Wonderful World" (my favourite song ever), it was all over for him. And any techno/club/dance "musician" that takes a great song and desecrates it. I'm talking to you, people who used Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" and Bryan Adams' "Heaven."
I just redid my LJ appearence yet again, right in time for the Holidays (well, a few months early, but if the mall can play Christmas music and have the tree in the centre set up, I can damn well customize my journal as such)! I changed the layout for the first time in over a year and I may also want to go into the advanced customizations later on and see if I can put flashing, Christmasy lights around the border. I'm keeping it simple, yet making it horrifyingly tacky. Rumour has it Jeff Hardy saw it and said, "Dear god, that's horrifyingly tacky" (it's just a rumour, because no one could really understand what he was saying).
I'm not really into fashion or style or "putting the effort into looking anything coming close to resembling good," but what the sod was up with Jeff's white outfit on Impact?! Granted, it looked less ridculous than Cena does on any given Raw, but I thought he had stepped out of a Backstreet Boys video from ten years ago.
Good lord I spent about an hour on this LJ. I've wasted today in so many ways. Granted, I did watch The Thin Man and Impact, but other than that...let's see...I spent hours this afternoon doing sudokus, including one that took me about two hours (and that I eventually gave up after screwing up beyond all belief). I really need to get out of the house, but that would take effort.
Oh yeah, I got my '80s advert disc in. I'll annoy everyone by writing about it in great detail in the future. They have those "Feature Presentation bumpers" that cable movie channels (such as Showtime and Cinemax) used around the mid-80s, and some were downright frightening. I love the HBO in Space one, but there was a Showtime one that'll have me lying awake in bed at nights.
Actually, I'll sleeping really peacefully, just not that much when I do. I have agreed to go into work early every day until Christmas. It'll start with me showing up at nine this week, and then earlier in December. I'll probably have to be in at 5 fucking AM on Black Friday. They'd better at least let me out around 3, or I swear, I'll use all of my strength to lift my till and bludgeon a helpless old lady to death. I don't know why I do so much for them. I really do love the place deep down inside, though. No matter how bad it gets, I just think of how much worst there is out there, and show up again, ready to service the old ladies with a great big smile! I just hope the managers remember all this when I do want something.
What a dull entry. I think I'll steal a car and try to provoke a Bum Fight next week, just to spice things up. The entry will probably still be dull, though, as I'll forget about both and write about how I fell asleep on the till at work and still managed to be a better employee than half the staff (especially the night crew).
And I'm off to try and watch I Robot before going to bed. Don't take candy from strangers!
