Stevenson held a Club Leaders retreat this past weekend and this morning I'm still recovering. There have been some changes between this coming semester and last in relation to campus clubs as well as the budget so they wanted to give us that information as well as give us a chance to do some teambuilding activities, which actually weren't too bad.
We did a Ropes course on Saturday and it seemed like everyone had a good time despite what some of the activities demanded of us and that fact that it was hot as Hades out. The first station was this rope maze that we had to go through with our eyes closed with only the rope and the person in front of us to rely on. As someone who has more than a few trust issues this was probably the hardest of all of the challenges of the day for me. Fortunately, I was near Jenny who I see as one of my most trusted companions. We got through ok and then watched everyone else struggled (or in the case of that one girl Danielle, flail) through the maze.
After the maze we did an activity where we all stood on a single log and then with out speaking or stepping off had to rearrange ourselves so that we were standing in order of our birthday with January being at front and December at the back. This was so hard and me being she of little balance fell off like 5 times, but we finally did it.
We also did this tettertotter thing where we tried to balance our weights while doing a number of maneuvers and aced that one the first try without either side touching the ground.
Then it was on to the high ropes, which I've done before but, still find terrifying. In fact when I got up there I my heart leaped into my chest and I couldn't breathe and I simultaneously wanted to faint and throw up. I finished the line walk in one piece without hurling and was quite proud of myself. I wasn't even shaking this time.
And then I did this other thing where you had to grab a rope and swing across to some pollyspots and failed miserably.
Sunday was when we got most of the info that we came for. All clubs (with the exception of SGA, MAP and special interest groups) get up budget of $500 for the year, up from $200 last year, which is pretty freaking awesome. The extra money comes from the new student fees that they charged this year as a part of our tuition and is to offset our costs somewhat so we aren't constantly fund-raising and clubs can spend more time doing the things we started the clubs for. In addition, the requirements are now called Foundations and actually seem more interesting (and easier if you ask me) than the old ones of Fund-raising, Social, Educational and Community Service. We had a couple breaks for group time and with all this info flying at me my mind was running full tilt churning out stuff and now I am so pumped. The group time also gave us a chance, as new club to see how the executive board of our club is together. Now while we all weren't there (Our other VP and Historian weren't present), I think those who were there really clicked and I think we compliment each other well. I don't know if it's because of the new Student Activity Department leaders and the fact that they all seem generally interested in our clubs (you guys, I think Hope is going to be at all of the CosClub meetings she is so excited), really trying to make it easy for us to succeed in addition to changing to fighting the prevailing culture of Stevenson (apathy, not dealing directly with the students even though it's a small school, "nothing ever happens here" mentality, workworkworkworkworkcollapsework)that I'm REALLY getting excited for the next year. Really seeing Cosplay Club get off the ground and my 3R class (Robber Barons, Radicals and Revolutionaries) have become my new meanings for living.
Well here's to hoping! *crosses fingers*
