So, remember like a long, long time ago I talked about how there is supposed to be a live action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie (directed by M. Night Shyamalan *winces*) coming out? Well the first photos from the movie (I wanted to use the term "production stills". Is that correct film friends of mine?) came out late last month. So, far they have Zuko played by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame and 12 year old Noah Ringer as Aang. Pictures and more info
here and
here.
I think the kid they picked for Aang is PERFECT and I love how his costume looks. As for Zuko, I'm not so excited for several reasons. First is the scar. Anyone whose seen the show knows how Zuko angsts about that thing like crazy and it is his defining feature. Personally, I think it should be more grotesque, prominant and disfiguring. Here's to hoping that the photos that have come out so far are washed out. Secondly, on the top of personal appearance is the hair. What the heck? Where is Zuko's ponytail/top knot thing? Right now he looks rather Season 2-ish. Also, without it when they do the second movie that can't do, what is in my opinion, one of the best scenes in the series, the scene in which Iroh and Zuko cut off their top knots, recognizing that they are now hunted men and severing their ties as cogs in the Fire Nation warmachine. Argh...
All in all, I'll admit I'm excited to see the movie. I had and still have my reservations about the director as as of late he has made some downright TERRIBLE movies, but as one of the reviewers in the links about said M. Night Shymalan does have pretty decent skills when it comes to directing child actors (Sixth Sense) and does good work when the source material is good (Unbreakable, one of my favorite movies). These photos haven't swayed me either way. As of right now I'm still going to see it...with a flask of cactus juice. ;-P
What do you guys think?
