A question about milk

Apr 06, 2008 05:48

I have to ask a question about breastmilk. I decided to formula feed Arianna so I can feel more secure with having to take meds again for my GERD and related issues. Unfortunately, my milk is starting to come in anyway, and I am trying to figure out how to stop it. I have started leaking, so I got some breast pads so I do not ruin any shirts ( Read more... )

question, breastfeeding

it shouldn't be a sore subject. Its your decision.

kellymom.com will probably have some imformation for you.
If your breasts get engorged you should express the milk to relieve the discomfort.

If she expresses the milk it will just encourage her body to make more. If she wants to dry up this is the worst thing for her to do.

Do not under ANY circumstances express any breast milk like the previous poster wrote. If you do you are just encouraging and telling your body to make more milk and continue milk production. The best way for it to dry up is get a large ace bandage and wrap your breasts very tightly over your bra. It will help suppress the milk ducts and keep them from engorging too much. It is a very uncomfortable week or so but then you will be completely dried up. I speak from personal experience. I hope this helps. Any other questions feel free to ask. :

Will just wearing my sports bras do it?? I think I am now a D cup, so they are tight. I have pads in them for leaking issues right now, so it is even a little tighter.

So far, they don't hurt or anything...just leaking. It seems to only be one breast too, not the other one.

I wore a sports bra, a tight tank top over that and THEN the ace bandage. I also had issues with one more than the other. I would wrap yourself up real tight with the ace bandage & see what happens in a week. If they don't hurt that's great because mine hurt for 2-3 days REALLY bad before they dried up.

My midwife told me that the drugs that are given for it have been linked to breast cancer later in life. There are a bunch of herbal teas that you can get at any herbalist's shop that should help ( ... )

Once I figured out my milk was coming in, I tried to see if she would take the breast....she is so used to formula now that it isn't an option.

If you really wanted to...you could...it will take some work. My friends son spent the first two months of his life in the NICU receiving a feeding tube then bottles, when he came home she taught him to nurse. It was a struggle...but she did manage it. If you are going that route...start expressing and replace the formula in the bottle...get her used to the taste of you...I"m sure kellymom or you OB or a LC will be helpful.

Coudnt you consult your doctor to see if the gerd medication is safe? Or if there is one?

The med that works for me is either Prilosec or Nexium...neither can be used during breastfeeding. It does pass into the milk.

My OB had me on Pepsid during my pregnancy, but it doesn't work that great on me, so I had to make due with Rolaids, which was very rough.

You can most definitely take Prilosec while breastfeeding. I have horrible reflux and needed to take medicine during pregnancy and beyond. Ask them to look it up in Hale's:
