3 reasons to go see Real Steel... Right now!!!

1. It is NOT "Rock em, Sock em Robots: The movie"

Yes, I know it's robots fighting in a ring, and there's that one scene in the trailer with the head coming off, but well, those are inevitable comparisons, I guess. In actuality, Real Steel is an adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1956 short story, "Steel". Yes, Richard Matheson, He of "I am Legend" and "A Stir of Echoes" and "The Incredible Shrinking Man". yes, the movie actually has real literary lineage behind it. It's no more ReSeR than any of the Transformers movies were. Oh yeah, speaking of which...

2. The Robot fights are better than in either of the last two Transformers...

...and come close to topping them from the first one. Yeah, the ones in Transformers are bigger, have more explosions and stuff, but Micheal Bay seems to have a way of making you not care one bit about the robots as they're fighting. it's just one sugary rush to the next and at the end of the movies, they're all just a big blur together. In Real Steel, you actually care about Atom and his well being in the fights. Repeatedly, I caught myself on the edge of my seat watching the bouts and at least twice I actually CHEERED for Atom. And it wasn't just me: I looked around the theater and a LOT of people were doing the same thing as me, and not just the kids. The Parents were on the edge of their seats as well. That is superb filmmaking. Oh yeah, and no giant robot testicles in this one.

3. Hugh Jackman

Dammit Hugh: Why do you have to be so damn likeable? I mean, he plays a hustling little dirtbag in this movie, but throughout the entire movie, you just wanna go and take him for a beer and hang out. and it helps that hes surrounded by a pretty good cast. Dakota Goyo plays his son and he's not an annoying little moppet like you too often see in films. Let's hope he's more Haley Joel Osment than Jake Lloyd in his movie future. The rest of the cast rounds out nicely, but yeah, Hugh and Dakota are the centerpiece of this film and they really make it enjoyable.

So yeah, Real Steel: Where I was expecting a lot of "So bad it's good" I got a lot of "Stand up and cheer awesome!" Yeah, it's a pretty basic "Rocky" story, but hey, everyone loves an underdog. There are plans for a sequel, and if they actually do it, then hey, I'll go see it. ^_^
