can't sleep = pro-con list time
I finished all my grad school applications last week, and I still have no strong preference toward any of the three programs. Let me break it down:
UCSC Social Documentation
+ cool town, already know my way around a little bit
+ gamelan ensemble (to play in and to study), ethnomusicology department
+/- KZSC
- program doesn't feel exactly quite right
- don't really know anyone there
USC Specialized Journalism in the Arts
+ awesome program, intriguing faculty
+ cute little freeform AM station
+ campus is five miles from The Smell
+/- LA
- no world music focus at the music school
- be in LA while Jojo is in Japan
SF State Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts
+ close to family, friends, homebase
+ possible collaboration with cultural anthro department and Okinawan expert my aunt is friends with
+ possibly live in the East Bay
- heavy emphasis on TV news broadcasting
- SF
I like the idea of continuing "Phoning It In" wherever I go, whether or not I have time to. It breaks my heart to think about not playing gamelan anymore, but it might not be the same elsewhere. I hope I only get into two, or one, so the decision is easier. I bet I could be happy anywhere.
