It seems that my housing situation is progressing faster than expected.
At the beginning of this weekend, we learned that my housemate/landlady has had an offer on the house. Assuming that everything goes forward, she'll be looking at a closing date around the end of May. This is a very good thing for her, and I'm very happy to hear it.
This also made bratling and I a bit nervous, as it sets the clock ticking more definitively for us to find our own place. But then, it looks like we've made progress on that front, too. We went up to Haverhill to look at houses with our buyer's agent yesterday. Every house we went intending to see turned out to be in pretty unfortunate condition--if it's in our price range, it seems, it needs substantial renovation--but another house, which the agent happened to spot as we were driving by, looks like a very strong possibility. It's very funky and 50s, and seems to be down near our price range because of its odd aesthetic; it's in great shape. It's a tad too expensive as listed, which is why we didn't initially take note of it, but the agent seems pretty confident that he can get the price down.
It has a bit of a yard, a bath tub you could actually comfortably bathe in, a nice garage under the house, and a clean, spacious basement that looks eminently finish-able. It also has bedrooms with chartreuse carpets and, in one case, pink walls, but we can fix that. And the stuff under the carpet appears to be nice oak floors, all throughout the house. The agent said it's probably even oak under the vinyl kitchen floor.
And, well, it's in Haverhill. Which is still further north than I wanted to be, but I'm finding that the town has a good feel to me.
So between one thing and another, it looks like we're going to try putting in an offer on the house.
Pardon me while my head spins.
