One year there came to Ohtori a young man with pale hair, and he saw that the children of Ohtori were ill at ease. They were oppressed and frightened by the terrors of the adults; for the Student Council was frightfully arbitrary in their rules, and the leaders of the academy had no interest in meddling with their power. Schools are frightful places at the best of times, where hearts quiver at the uncertainty of the monster called 'tomorrow'. And so the boy, for he was as shrewd young man and knew the hearts of his elders, proposed that there be a group of children, selected to guide and protect the junior section of the academy much as the Student Council oversaw the senior.
And so it was that the Guardians were created, to safeguard the hearts and minds of the young, and to protect the fragile egg of potential that exists within every child. Because the boy knew well the secrets hidden within a deck of cards, he named the seats for the faces of the deck: The King's Chair, the Queen's Chair, the Jack's Chair, and the Ace's Chair. But the boy knew more than the adults could guess, and he selected for each Chair only those whose heart's eggs shone brighter than any other, and had hatched a Guardian Character - a fairy representing the child's hopes and dreams. This would allow the Guardians to better safeguard the hopes and dreams of their charges.
The boy himself became the Founding King, and led the Guardians until he at last graduated into the senior academy. For future generations of Guardians, he left a gift, and a prophecy: A gold-and-crystal lock with no key, which he said was to be kept safe...until a girl with three Guardian Characters appears.
Some years passed before the boy returned to the Academy as a man, and with his kindly demeanor and love for his charges, he became their advisor, their confidante, and their protector: Though not all have realized, the Founding King is the very same as the current chairman of Ohtori Academy's junior division, Tsukasa Amakawa.
