In 1973, the daughter of the Ohtori family was engaged to a dashing young man by the name of Akio. Soon after, the elder Ohtori fell desperately ill, and so Akio's adoption into the family was accelerated; he became the new, temporary patriarch, until his father-in-law-to-be could be well again, and as such he would assume administrative responsibilities over Ohtori Academy. Akio quickly entrenched the high school student council. Dedicated to giving students the power to govern themselves, Akio invested in the student council almost all the power of the school's governance, incidentally clearing his plate of almost all duties at the same time.
At the same time, the mysterious Ends of the World began operating out of Ohtori Academy - submitting to troubled students letters granting them the right to challenge their enemies in the Duel Arena situated in the forbidden forest on top of the hill the school surrounded. The Magic Association, when they had time to wonder, knew that this was impossible - there had never been such a structure there before, and Akio had certainly not been in power long enough to create it.
They did not have the time to wonder for long, as slowly, in ways the Association had difficulty tracking, the world around Ohtori Academy twisted. Slowly, the island shifted into a strange, not-quite-right dreamworld, where the laws of causality as humans rely on them simply didn't work. Time passed with a strangely arbitrary disregard for the actual march of the clock. And the Magic Association found that their wards had little power in these bizarre new rules...
Today, nobody actually knows for certain what happened to that task force. One day, the caverns beneath the island went silent, and the Magic Association was never again able to get a foothold on the island. All that was left behind was a final report delivered to the Kanto Magic Association in Mahora Academy. It was empty, save for a single phrase:
"For the revolution of the world!"
