Elena should've seen it coming.
She does, really, but her heart still clenches painfully, subtle panic bubbling up her throat.
Katherine is resourceful, too cunning for her own good--Elena expected her to keep tabs. Elena glances around, hoping against hope none of her friends are anywhere nearby. She wanted to tell them about recent developments herself. Alone, in private. She hasn't had a chance to, and she wasn't sure exactly what she was going to say, but she knew she had to say something.
Sitting out here with Katherine out in the open would blow that all apart. Just the thought of them meeting Katherine has her stomach tied up in knots until she's sick with it, and she's no longer hungry.
She stares at Katherine for a moment as she eats a... taco?
Re: [locked] katherine and elenapetrovafireJanuary 17 2012, 03:15:10 UTC
Elena is right. She should have seen this coming. But, instead of worrying and looking over her shoulder, Elena had been living, returning to school after the holidays, moving on with her life. Of course, Katherine is also aware Elena is trying to find Stefan. And were she a different animal, she would help her with that. She could admit where he is. But, she isn't that animal. And with her rift change she needs to watch what she says and how she answers Elena - and anyone for that matter

Re: [locked] katherine and elenadescendentJanuary 17 2012, 03:54:46 UTC
She let herself believe this might not end up happening. Elena wouldn't have, normally. Not in Mystic Falls. If she truly let herself, she knew she'd just be setting herself up for the moment it all came crashing down on her. But time has a way of blurring things together, and as the months wore on, she believed she might figure it out. Who she is, away from the doppelganger curse. Who she is, as simply Elena.
Katherine sitting across from her is the solid reminder there's no escape from that, and her lips press into a thin line. Stefan said something similar--that Elena was asking the wrong questions, and it just burns further. Let me go, he said. She wasn't there, for any of it. The last she knew of Katherine, she was in the tomb, and before that, she hurt Jenna because Elena wouldn't break up with Stefan

And Katherine has definitely been learning to circumvent that outright setback. And, because she's Katherine, she's worked on perfecting skirting around her rift change.
"Neither did you," she says. "You could have wallowed. Stayed in bed. But? You faced the day. You are woman, hear you roar." A bite of salad follows that as Katherine can't wipe her own smile off her face. She's having too much fun. "And, what? Is it a crime to see what you're up to? I was curious." She leans in. "I'm new. You could show me around. Maybe I'll enroll..." She sits back again, giving the room another look around. "I never went to college and, truth be told, I'm surprised you got there."
She looks down again, setting her fork beside her salad plate on the tray.
"You see, being Elena Gilbert means you have someone after you - what is it? Weekly? I'm a little bit impressed." She takes a bite. "With this taco and with your resilience. And it takes a lot to impress me."

Connor hasn't run into Elena today.
He skipped first class. Not because he wanted to, surprisingly enough. It was just one of those days where no matter what he did, he kept getting stalled, and by the time he made it to their campus, the class had long since started. Their professor is a jerkwad, in his opinion, and if you're not there on the dot, you can't make your way into the class.
So later, when he finds who he thinks is Elena sitting on a bench, he waves at her in greeting and half-jogs his way over to her.
"Elena! Hey," Connor says, smiling at her warmly as he steps over to his friend, sliding into the bench next to her. "You wouldn't happen to have the notes to Preston's class for today, would you?"
It's not the first time he's had to ask her or another one of their friends for notes, so he doesn't expect her to be surprised about this fact.
The coffee to her lips, Katherine's eyes spot the friend warmly, not hesitating to wave back as she brings the cup down. This friend of Elena's is attractive. And male. She wonders if the entire year has been spent pining for Stefan, or perhaps dating Damon. But, she has no idea. She hasn't been there.
Katherine turns to face this friend, whose name she doesn't know. "Hey," she says, in only slightly hesitantly. "I don't. I'm sorry." She shrugs. "I didn't...go today."
Katherine's not knowing his name is a problem solved neatly enough when one of the undergrads walks past them, waving at him. "Yo, Connor! Will we see you tonight?" they ask, but Connor waves them off, as he's not in the mood to meet the regulars down at the pub, and focuses on who he thinks is Elena instead.
"Is everything okay?" he asks with slight concern. "Jeremy didn't get into another fight, did he?"
Connor. Thank you, helpful passerby. She notes his name and that he looks like a Connor. More interesting information incoming? Yes. Jeremy and Elena had had a fight.
"Everything's fine," she says. "Jeremy's -- Jeremy. He's stronger than even I think, sometimes," she adds, trying to sound sisterly. "Did I tell you what we fought about?" She tries to be subtle, asking questions.

Ethan has not seen Elena today, but they usually end up having lunch at school together. He has absolutely no idea that anything's gone on. Ethan could tell despite his tendency to run away from serious matters that Elena has been through a lot. She has that look about her that makes her seem older than she actually is, and it's not hard to tell that she' had a rough life, but he has no idea that she has a lookalike.
No idea how tangled and complicated that life actually was before she ended up in Chicago.
He's holding a tray of his own, walking up to the table that they ordinarily sit at. It's when he notices that Elena is not alone, but he's coming up from behind so he can't see their face until he's close and then he freezes because wait, he thought Elena was sitting on the right side. Only she's on the left and the right, and what.
There are two Elenas sitting at the table. There are two Elenas... Okay, a guy can have dreams about these types of things, but they are very clothed for this to be one of those dreams and he's

Elena and Katherine have been having a discussion.
It doesn't exactly look like the smoothest one, with one of them appearing way too amused by life and the other appearing as if she is quite possibly swallowing nails. Both of them with the exact same face. Anyone walking past them would think they're twins. There is literally nothing to tell them apart, save for the way they carry themselves and their hair.
She closes her eyes at the sound of Ethan's voice. She really, really wanted to be able to tell him in private, on her own, and not like this, with Katherine's commentary in the background.
When she opens her eyes again, Elena glances over at Katherine, the expression on her face entirely too easy to read.
Don't even think about it.She logically realizes Katherine has no reason to terrorize the people she cares about in this world, no reason to toy with them, but that doesn't mean she won't have her guard up regardless. She cannot begin to explain how little she wanted these two worlds to bleed together

Please. Katherine has been enjoying herself. And at least they haven't been having an argument. Elena needs to relax in Katherine's opinion. They could be friends if they tried. Okay, this is a lie. Not with what Katherine has done. There isn't nothing. She finds she is not Elena but being Elena ends up being effortless.
Katherine looks at Elena and then up at this new guy expectantly. She then leans down and picks up his apple, setting it back on his tray.
"Elena..." Katherine starts. "I believe introductions are in order." She smiles up at Ethan. "Hello Ethan. I'm Katherine."
It doesn't take Ethan long at all to be able to tell that. There is the initial shock at having his friend and what looks like a copy of his friend, someone that looks exactly like her sitting together. After the shock fades, he takes in Elena's demeanor, and he knows that whoever this person is... it is not good.
Whoever this is, Elena's not happy at all. She seems really upset, and it gets his hackles up automatically. Ethan is a really easy going guy to the point that it is almost bad for him, because he ignores and avoids subjects that he shouldn't. These are subjects that are potentially life and death if he does ignore, and he still will ignore it.
However, if someone threatens or hurts someone that he cares about, it's another matter entirely. He's uncertain, and his hackles are up. The loyalty comes a lot from being a werewolf, a lot from being a Hale, and a lot from being Ethan too.
He still looks completely uncertain as he glances between the two of them, continuously, as if he's searching for a difference there,

When Mark met Elena, she was not her usual self. She'd eaten an apple that made her more carefree than usual, and together they went on a magic carpet ride to a tequila fountain. They both ended up very drunk, but it was a lot of fun! She's an awesome friend to him, and he'll always be in her life to rush in and remind her how to have fluffy, fun times.
He's out with some sugary drink when he runs into Elena. Mark sees her nearly slip and fall, and being an angel, he's fast and can get there in a moment. He moves forward and grabs hold of her hand when she reaches for something to grab.
"Hey, you okay there? The ice is... slippery, and Mark makes observant, important, and not at all redundant comments," he says with a small smile as he tries to keep her steady. "I think they cleared the sidewalk over this way more."
Mark makes a face at the ice as if it had tripped her on purpose. "I hate the snow

She chalks it up to the city keeping everyone busy, and it's definitely been keeping her busy, too. The night they found themselves taken away by a magic carpet feels like it was so very long ago. It wasn't, not really, but she doesn't forget that night and how good of a friend he's been to her, how many lighthearted moments he brings into everyone's life.
There's a small, fast-moving blur, and then there's a Mark!
"Mark! Hey. I'm okay. I should've just... watched where I was going," Elena says, and she gives him a small smile too, using his arm to help her regain her balance. "Thanks."
Despite the severity of the last couple of days, she can't help the small smile as he makes a face at the ice. She is grateful for this indignant reaction on her behalf, Mark.
"Do you?" she asks, subdued amusement in her voice. "What's your favorite season, then?"
The city is very busy, and the Crowbar is almost always slammed with activity. It's been worse with the case that they have going on, trying to get at the Society before the Society comes for them.
Mark remains hopeful though he knows they are up against an incredibly powerful force. It's just in his nature to be hopeful like that despite the fact that there's tension about it at home, and they're all so used to having cases like that that it's-- it hasn't changed things too much. They're all able to take it in stride.
There is so a Mark. There at the exact right moment!
"I think even if you watched, you'd still have tripped. The ice is under the snow and hidden there so no one can blame you," Mark says, smiling back at her brightly and Mark-like, because this is how he rolls. "No problem. What are friends for?"
He is very indignant at the ice. How dare it trip her up like that? This is not okay!
"I do. I know a lot of angels don't mind it since we have the colder body temperature so it should feel more natural to us, but I

Elena is not surprised to find he's in a good mood. For that matter, she doesn't think she's ever encountered Mark while he's having a bad day, or if he is, he doesn't let it faze him. She briefly wonders how he does that, living in the kind of city they do.
"Yeah, and these are actually supposed to help with the traction," Elena says, giving him a smile even if it's not brightly, and it's half-hearted at best.
She is trying, okay?
"It's either the spring or the fall for me, for similar reasons," Elena says, letting herself be tugged away. She slips her hand over the crook of his arm as they walk, letting the rest of her thoughts dispel the way the ice melts on the sidewalk.

Martha sometimes finds herself in the Kashtta Tower gym. It is a good place to get frustrations out, and there were times in her life when she'd needed it. She'd needed and wanted to hurt something, and she'd taken it all out on a punching bag. Martha still remembers a conversation she had with Wes here, one of their most painful ones.
It's funny how the city never really stops. There are breaks. There are moments that they slow down, but it never really stops.
She can try with all her might to protect the young people living in her house, but she is also aware of how she can't. Martha was aware of it when she looked at Jeremy, beaten up from throwing himself into a fight with an angel
( ... )
She is fully concentrated in the task at hand, which is, to put it quite simply, beating the shit out of the punching bag. Her hands pummel at it every which way, and her leg lifts up to get a good kick in there, too. She spins and her fist solidly connects against the bag before she's even had a chance to catch her breath.
Once she can barely feel her arms, she momentarily stops, dropping her hands to her sides.
She's tired.
The voice draws her attention, and she turns at the sound of it, recognizing Martha before she's even gotten a look at her. She swallows and attempts to catch her breath before she answers.
"Hey," she says, still panting. Elena glances down at her hands, adjusting the gloves on them. It does help to take her frustrations out on it, since she can't do it elsewhere. "Yeah, it does. I was hoping to get some time in before I had to get to class. Do you come here often?"
Martha notices how much in deep concentration she seems to be, but she maintains her distance for the moment, letting her have that moment of complete focus
