"I don't... really know," she says, scratching the back of her head, still a bit sheepish. "It sounded a lot better in my head than it did once it was out of my mouth. Perhaps that needed some thought process."

There is no reason she can see why anyone would sparkle someone on purpose.

"Yeah, but we went together so we should've left together, and it just became this whole awkward thing when it really shouldn't have been. And they weren't just being terrible at me." They were taking pot shots at him too, which is what actually infuriated her. Sarah doesn't always mouth off at them. They're not worth the time or the effort.

It's just hard to remember that sometimes, especially in the heat of the moment.

She laughs a little at his suggestion and nods in agreement, sticking out her hand so they can shake on it. "Okay. Deal," she says. "And don't... remind me. I'm sad the summer's over and soon it's back to business as usual. Only one more day of freedom after this one."

It'll obviously be better than last year, since they do have each other when things start getting too rough. It's still not her favorite thing, either. "My schedule's kind of a pain this year, but I figure it's just one more year. We can manage. Maybe."

"Maybe it did or... maybe you were subconsciously trying to warn me," Jeremy says with a small smile. "Obviously, you have a thing with... sparkling people, and I should watch out."

There is likely some reason out there. Somewhere. They thought they could use some more shine. They wanted someone to look like Edward Cullen. Reasons exist!

"I know. It's how... I kind of figured that you weren't really okay. You left so fast and before I could say anything, but it's... cool. It really is. Just as long as you're okay," he says with a small smile as he looks down at her. "I didn't mind. I don't care what they say about me. People used to say stuff about me that was true and so I guess... I don't know. After that, the lies don't mean as much for me. I just hate that they treat you that way."

They treat everyone that way it seems like. If you don't drink their koolaid.

Jeremy grabs her hand, giving it a shake in turn. "Very cool," He says. "Yeah, I'm trying not to think about it. I like to think at least I don't have a guardian of some kind on my back about it, but my sister would be... on my back if I didn't show up."

Plus, there's Anne and Sarah will be there so Jeremy will too. "A pain how? Are you one of those types that takes all the hardest classes there is? Nothing easy? C'mon, it's your senior year here."

"That sounds a lot better than what I would've come up with," Sarah says with a small laugh. "I'll take it!"

You never know. There might just be. Now the narration wants her to save someone via sparkling. Blinding an evil ruffian so that others may escape!

"I'm okay now. And... you're okay too, right?" she asks, looking at him carefully. It's not that he doesn't look okay, but... words. " She looks up at him--seriously, Jeremy, why so tall--as he speaks, sticking one hand in the back pocket of her jeans. "Ah, I know. And it's cool to have someone sticking up for me but let's just ignore them. I've decided the complete indifference to them would spite them more than anything else."

They want those kinds of reactions and by not giving it to them, they should be winning by default. Of course, that's the mature thing to do and she kind of forgets in the moment, but. Details!

"I have some AP classes," Sarah admits with a nod, not looking too enthused about it. She's the daughter of an ambitious AoK, that's sort of a given, but it's not something she's gifted at, so much as something she has to actually struggle to achieve. "Easy... well, not easy so much as fun. I have an Art class I know I'll enjoy. And Biology's gonna be pretty easy going, too--"

After a pause, she asks: "Wait, you're not the birthday boy, are you? I didn't bring a gift with me."

This would be the most hilarious, perfect thing. Sarah should save someone with some sparkling action. It would be so hilarious and adorable. jrkle;a!

"Yeah, I'm okay. It's been kind of a busy week so I didn't think much about them and their... stupidity. Just worried about you a little," Jeremy admits, folding his arms over his chest as he looks down at her. Look he can't help that tallness runs in the Gilbert family! "Okay. I'll try my best to ignore instead of... fighting back. I don't make any promises, but I'll try."

He'll try, and he will probably fail because he is protective in nature and his angry button can be pushed pretty easily. It's a problem, but he is better than he used to be. The old Jeremy would have punched Carter right then and there.

Jeremy forgets the mature thing too.

"Ah, well. My year is not-- I mean I'm taking some classes, but nothing too AP-like. AP World history though. I'm pretty good at history, tested into it. Other than that, it's the non-AP classes for me," he says with a small smile before he pauses. "Wait, you're in Biology too? What period?"

He laughs, shaking his head. "No, it's not my birthday today. It's another wanderers. Veronica." And now it's time for him to pause, smiling a little as he looks down at her. "But hey, you seriously would have gotten me a gift? What would you have given me?"

Jeremy is curious, okay?

"That doesn't surprise me," she says with a quiet but genuine laugh. "Every week is kind of a busy week around here. I'm sorry for worrying you and not getting back to you. I know you're really chill with that and you get it, but still. And hey. You don't owe me any promises. I just wouldn't want them giving you trouble or anything and I appreciate you trying anyway."

She is very aware of how they can get under people's skins and push all the right buttons. It's all but their pasttime. It's just really not worth it and Jeremy deserves better than having to deal with that in his first and last school year here.

She'll deal with it if she's as much of a target this year as she was the last. Actually going on a date with Carter didn't help, and that was her choice so it's on her.

"Last period with one Sybill Trelawney. I still... don't know how that's going to work," she says with a nose wrinkle. Sarah slants her head to the side as she tries wrapping her head around this. "But I figure if she was hired, she has to know... something. About biology."

Sarah looks at him suspiciously, fighting back a smile of her own. She knows exactly what she would give him, but she's not all that willing to share. "Yeah, I would've. It's what you do for a... friend, right? If I tell you now, then... when your birthday does roll around, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore. You'd really want to spoil the suspense here?"

Curiosity kills the cat, Jeremy.

"Yeah, it's... kind of how Chicago rolls, isn't it? I thought Mystic Falls was bad, and it was, but it was... a different scale completely," Jeremy says, shaking his head at the apology. "No, don't... worry about it. I am chill. I get it entirely, and I know I don't owe you any, but I'd make that promise if I didn't know there's a good chance I'd break it. I used to get in fights a lot before."

Like a lot. It used to be a weekly thing almost. He grew out of it to a certain extent, but it also helped that he wasn't chasing after Vicki who was with Tyler who... at the time, he'd hated.

But he's not afraid of being a target and it won't make him change his own decisions about who he hangs out with.

"Hey, that's me too! Wait, why don't you know how that's going to work?" Jeremy is not all that well versed in Harry Potter though the narration imagines that it has to exist in their universe if Taylor Swift and Twilight exist there. "Was she teaching something completely different last year or like how do you know about her already?"

Jeremy smirks at her, folding his arms across his chest with a laugh when she says she would have. The smirk slips into a smile before long.

"Right. It is what you do for a friend, and we're friends. I'd get you something when your birthday rolled around even with my very limited funds. I should get a job but I'm not sure how this whole high school thing will work out as it is. I kind of want to know right now, but fair's fair and part of the gift could be the surprise of what it is so I'm not... going to deny you that. I'll just be in suspense for months. I think that's a really, really, really long time to be in suspense," he says, and he doesn't want his cat to be killed so he won't ask further. Maybe. "When's your birthday anyway?"

"Yeah, you mentioned the impulse control thing," she says with a small smile. It only took the skating rink debacle to see what he meant, but in his defense, the whole thing was entirely unprovoked and they were being particularly nasty that day. "For what it's worth, I'd back you up on it. That's what homies do, right? I'd probably be terrible at it, but! It's the thought that counts."

Sarah is that odd anomaly in that she is usually not a fighter and she is not really an expert on being a lover, either. But if she's pushed back enough there's a surprising show of fangs every now and then.

As exhibited by her argument with Brooke. Ahem.

"Really?" she asks, brightening considerably. "So we know now we at least share one class together, even if it's ... that one. She's...one of the fictional characters in the Harry Potter books? And she was kind of crazy. Talked a lot about the Inner Eye of the universe and ... things. Which isn't to say she's not more grounded now that she's here."

Sarah does have her reservations about the whole thing. She folds her arms across her chest the exact same way he does in response. She tries to look serious and enforced about this whole thing, but likely fails. "I think you could definitely find a part-time job, if you ever wanted to." At least, if he had the right papers. "It'd be worth the suspense! The kind of wanting to know will add on to the whole gift thing. Good things come to those who wait, Jeremy Gilbert."

She has no idea if that's true or not, but it's a saying for a reason, right?"

"Uh..." Headscratch of sheepishness. "The... 12th. So, a week from now. But you really, really don't need to get me anything." Especially not with the limited funds, and she knows Wanderers have a hard time of it. "Or your taking me skating is now considered my pre-emptive birthday gift. In which case, thank you."

"It used to be a problem, more of a problem," Jeremy says, and it still can be a problem. However, he held back at the skating rink and he is kind of proud of himself as normally he might have punched douchebag right then and there. "That's worth a lot. ...yeah, right. That's what homies do. I forgot you became part of the hood. It more than counts. There's a big difference between standing alone and standing with a friend."

Brooke is well aware that this means war, however, and she'll keep pushing. It's going to be fun to see the fangs that Sarah can bring out, especially with the Plastics pushing their buttons like woah.

"Really. Yeah, we do. That's kinda cool. I don't take a lot of AP classes, but like next semester we should plan at least one more together, okay?" Jeremy pauses as she describes Trelawney. He looks half confused and half amused. "If nothing else, it'll be entertaining, right? I mean the eye is an organ a part of biology."

Jeremy, she is not talking about that eye, but it's nice of you to try.

Jeremy laughs when she mimics his stance with her own arms folded across her chest. He shakes his head. "Thank you. I don't know if I'll want to but it's a thought," he says, and it would be better than selling drugs to people. "Okay, okay. I believe you. I'll...try to wait. Are you sure you'll remember what you'd get me now by the time my birthday rolls around?"

The narration does not know when his birthday is, but she is leaning towards December. December seems like a good birth month for Jeremy Gilbert.

"Hey, it's soon. I'm going to get you something. I know I don't need to, but that's what friends do, right?" Yes, he just used her words against her, because he's talented in that way. "We should get together after school that day. I'll buy you a piece of cake or something. Ice cream? Or hey, when we hang out like we said we would, I'll do something for your birthday then. That wasn't a birthday gift. It was a hang-out with you thing."

There's a difference, okay?

"I believe that. You're so...chill, though," Sarah says, and she definitely doesn't mean that as a bad thing. Which isn't to say she doesn't believe him, but he seems a lot older than he really is sometimes. She has a feeling that has to do with life experience, but he's also so unflappable at times. It's something she envies. "... Yeah, I'm beginning to see that."

The difference between standing alone and standing alongside a friend. She can't say she doesn't like it.

Sarha will bring it, okay.

"Definitely! Though I'm taking AP World History, too. Two out of the rest isn't bad at all." Sarah bites back a smile. "No, not the eye as in--" she points to her own eye. "When she speaks of the inner eye she means... Divination. She believes she knows what is going to happen based on how the stars align and the cosmos and...it's odd."

Sarah has no idea what to expect, but she has a feeling even her wildest attempt at imagination would not do it justice. In that sense, she's kind of looking forward to it. Not everyone can say they're being taught by someone that was once a fictional character in the most popular of children's books.

"I will have you know I have all but photographic memory," Sarah says, and she only stops folding her arms across her chest in mimic of his stance to tap at her temple with an index finger. "There is no way I will be forgetting. And by that time, I might have even made it more awesome!"

December really does seem like a good month.

"Friends that have limited funds are exempt from that," Sarah says with a pointed look, since she is equally talented that way. "Not that I will... say no to cake and/or ice cream if it exists in my vicinity. But seriously, just hanging out's more than enough so no planning on getting me anything."

Have a very serious look, Jeremy.

"It took me time and... stuff to get this chill. I definitely wasn't always like this even a year ago, I was a lot... different. You might not have liked me then," Jeremy admits, and it's funny that he was less chill when he was all involved in the drug world. He was all intense about stuff, always quick to jump up and protect Vicki. "It's good to keep in mind, Sarah. Whatever else happens, you know you're not standing alone anymore. You couldn't get rid of me if you tried."

He nudges her with his elbow, smiling at her. They already stood up to the most popular bullies in school. Nothing cements friendship quite like that.

Well, that and near death experiences.

"Awesome. No, it could be worse. I knew of kids who would have full AP course loads along with the roughest non-AP classes," he says, and it's nothing he could handle himself as he is not that smart. "...Oh. That's really... weird. At least it'll be entertaining maybe? I don't know if we'll learn anything, but she has to know something."

Maybe. Jeremy has no idea what to expect, but he'll find out tomorrow along with everyone else in their class. He'll be doing a lot of staring in complete confusion.

He leans back on his feet and laughs at her tapping her temple before going right back into the mimicking. "Ah, you do? So if I ever do something embarrassing or completely idiotic, you would remember it forever? That's good to know. I'm going to have to be on my best behavior around you."

Then it will be DECEMBER for whatever reason.

"Hey, I have limited funds but not completely missing funds here," Jeremy says with a look that is... nowhere near as pointed but it's there. "That's right. You can't say no to me so count on it. The 12th. You and me and ice cream. It's happening."

Have a very serious look back, Sarah.

"In that case, you get props for growth. I don't know. I like to think I'd like Jeremy Gilbert in any incarnation. At the very least, I'd try to understand. I could say the same thing about myself a year ago." Just having found out her Calling, much more sullen, less with the talking, more with the morbid. "I'll remember that for whenever I decide to get rid of you, though I can't really see that happening."

She grins a little, looking down and scuffing her shoe mindlessly.

Well, clearly they need to have a near death experience now.

"It could be entertaining!" Sarah says in agreement. She isn't all that intense about academic things as certain other people. Ahem. "You never know. My friend Elizabeth says I should never say never, since Chicago likes proving the opposite of what we believe, so I'm trying out a new life motto thing. We'll see how it goes."

She laughs along with him but nods very somberly. "I do. But who says I want people on their best behavior around me? That's not exactly full living, and I've decided I should like that more."

Those who live deeply have no fear of death.

"Which is why you should take care of those funds so they don't go completely missing." Sarah will not break the serious staring contest for a while, until she breaks into a small grin in spite of herself. She does not answer him, only shakes her head and says, "I'll see you at school, Mr. Gilbert," before waving and . This is not her friend's party, so it'd be really weird to stick around, and she'll get to see him tomorrow and every school day after that.

Senior year might just be the good one yet.
