There is no way Randall's missing Veronica's party. Yes, he already took her out on her birthday, but parties are another matter. He likes parties. And he's glad there's one for Veronica, because he thinks she's funny and awesome and he wants her to have all the friends she can.
In an effort to help this he invited Sophie to come along. He isn't sure if she and Veronica know each other or not, but one more party-goer is never a bad thing.
He stops first to find a gift so that he doesn't show up empty-handed, but then he makes his way to the party. He's smiling and happy today as he mills around and starts to look for people he knows. The birthday girl, Sophie, and anyone else.
Sophie doesn't know Veronica at all, but you don't turn down a nice man when he asks you to a party. That's simply rude, after all. And an outdoor soiree, even if it's not her usual style, is always a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
She wanders into Grant Park, and it doesn't take her long to pick Randall out of the crowd, given his height. Slowly, she makes her way over and flashes him a smile. "Having a good time so far?"
He swings around when she appears and his grin only widens. "Hey! Sophie! Glad you made it!" He glances around at the scene. "Well, I just got here but it looks like a pretty rockin' party so far."
He leans in a bit and points to where the food is. "There's cake."
She smiles back at him, settling into the spot next to him as she looks around. "Food, music -- your friend seems to have covered all the bases rather well."
And that is the truth. It seems as though everything's been accounted for.
"Oh, well, I don't know the guy who's throwing it, but he does seem to know how to have a good time. There's even a wienermobile." And he pauses. Those are strange words to use while still working on the flirting angle.
He's blushing a bit and moving on. "I'll have to introduce you to Veronica when I see her, though."
"I'm really glad he did. Veronica's a nice girl and she deserves something like this."
He thinks for a moment and smiles. "You know, she actually fell through the same day as me? It's still hard to believe we've been here now as long as we have."
"And how long has that been?" Sophie hasn't been here long either, compared to some of the people she's met, but sometimes it feels like it's been forever. She's curious as to everyone else's perspective.
Maura's happy to see a familiar face, and a cute one, at that. She doesn't know Randall too well yet, but from their previous interactions, her instinct tells her he's a nice guy, and someone she doesn't have to worry about approaching again.
She makes her way over to him, smiles, and says, "You seem to be more coordinated today."
Randall would be happy to know that Maura has him pegged as the nice guy, because he likes being the nice guy. He doesn't know any other way to be. When he hears the familiar voice he turns, then beams when he sees who it is.
"Hi! Yeah, yeah I've got that going for me so far. I'm waiting to see how the rest of the day pans out before getting too excited though," he laughs.
She would be glad to know her instincts are correct.
"I've been adjusting, though there's still so much to learn about the city. I've been able to find employment as a medical examiner here. Something familiar certainly helps."

You don't forget a strange little man in a wiener mobile. No matter how long ago you fell through the Rift and he offered you a hot dog.
