"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive," he murmurs as he follows Castiel through Grant Park. "Isn't that how the saying goes? Or at least -- that's what Sam tells me."
The words coming out of Sam's mouth are bitter and hard, and very much unlike the man he knows, but he also knows that it's not Sam. Knows that the thing inside Sam, the one that has never left his side and simply been taunting him for the past three days has Sam locked away, deep inside. While Castiel knows the end of the story, knows that Sam is stronger than Lucifer and in the end they win, but that doesn't make a difference. He never goes away, just continues to taunt him as they go through the park.
"I'm not deceiving anyone."
"Now, now Castiel. We all know you're a terrible liar." The smirk in his voice is unbearable, and he isn't sure why Lucifer hasn't just killed him already. Lucifer is the stronger angel. That much is certain. He could have, he has killed him with a snap ( ... )

Cassie knows that things aren't right in Chicago. She knows Anne's been seeing Robin everywhere she goes. Although there can be ghosts in the Tower - Robin wandering around isn't normal. It's not right. Tonks is being followed by a dog, she found out those things on the journals anyway.
She has her own monster following her wherever she goes, too. She blocks out the whispers with music - trying to ignore whatever's snapping at her heels. She doesn't know what else she can do about that.
And now Castiel is stood talking to himself.. well, that's how it appears anyway. There's no one there. Something's wrong, and she doesn't need to think about it - she's already heading over. There's a frown on her face and she's worried. Whatever's going on can't be good in the slightest.
"Who... are you talking to?"

However, the idea that he's actually seeing things doesn't occur to him. Instead, he just assumes that she's asking who it is he's talking to, and his eyes track Lucifer as he moves around the girl, reaching up to brush strands of hair from her shoulder.
"No one," Castiel replies. "He's no one." At least, he is here.

"But... there's no one there," she says quietly, looking around at the space around him. "Who's he? Who's there?"
She shakes her head, "Something is very wrong, something's happening to people all over the city. I don't know why, but it is," she says, not noticing the person circling around her. She feels somewhat uncomfortable, but she's putting that down to whatever's happening in general.

"So fragile, Castiel. Think of how easy it would be for me to just reach in and rip out her heart."
Castiel's jaw tightens, and the wind starts to pick up around them. It's anger, and there's a crack of thunder, before Lucifer chuckles.
"Calm down, brother. You know that posturing doesn't intimidate me. I'm still the stronger angel -- and you know it."
The wind dies, but only slightly. Just enough for Castiel to answer Cassie's question. "It's Lucifer. I'm seeing Lucifer."

She shifts uneasily from foot to foot, unsure of what to say for a moment. This is bad, really bad.
“Okay.. Cas, listen to me… he’s not real - not here,” she says carefully, “Chicago’s doing something to everyone - I think we’re seeing things. Ghosts or something. It’s happening to me and it’s happening to my other friends,”
She looks around nervously, “It’s not the real Lucifer. It can’t be. Don’t listen to him,”

"I can't be sure," he replies, reaching forward and taking Cassie's hand to pull her towards him and away from Lucifer. "Lucifer is a master of visual deception."
He taught Gabriel everything he knew. It's only fair to presume that he knows more.

"My friend Anne can see ghosts, she's seeing Robin," she tells him, "That's not right, this isn't either. The Rift is just as good at playing with your mind - it doesn't matter who you are,"
She knows whatever's following her is saying hurtful things about Iris. A ghost of Robin being around is hurting Anne. She doesn't want to face what's hurting her right now - but she knows she has to try and help Cas somehow - because whatever this is, it's trying to hurt him too.
"He's talking... what's he saying to you?" she asks him.

She doesn't need to know about the threats against her specifically. It won't get them anywhere. But if this apparition of Lucifer isn't real, it's plausible that Castiel stood a chance in defeating him -- it is simply a matter of discovering how to banish it.

She's still looking over to where she was once stood with a unnatural hard stare. Lucifer's there, she knows it. Castiel's helped her too many times to count now, she wants to return the favour. Because that's what friends do - they help each other. With a small sigh, she looks back at him with a look of concern.
"Cas, talk to me," she says gently, "Don't be stoic about this, please,"

"He's talking about how easily he could kill you," he says quietly. "How feeble humans are."
"Well, that's a step," Lucifer smirks. "Though I'm sure there's more you need to get off your chest, isn't there?"
Reply
"He's not going to kill me," she says with a shake of her head, "We're made of stronger stuff than he thinks. People who survive in Chicago are definitely proof of that,"
She feels the pause and smiles encouragingly, "You're doing good. What else is he saying?"

His faith in people isn't what is in question, it's his faith in his friends, and the secrets he's keeping from them. There are only so many things that a person can keep, that a person can handle, especially when the brothers haven't been through these trials with him.
"I have two friends in Chicago. They are friends from my world, and they ... they are my family. However, they are from before they met me, and I have been keeping many things about their future from them."

"An Apocalypse is not something I think that should be shared," he begins slowly. "Not in a world where it holds no bearing."

She bites down on her lower lip and falls silent as she takes this is. And with a soft exhale, she still finds herself able to offer him a smile.
"Okay, you might have a point there with something like that," she says gently, "If you feel that you shouldn't tell your friends about what happens to them, then that's alright. You're not doing something wrong by keeping that from them,"
Cassie nods her head, "We all have our secrets, even the big ones. It doesn't make us bad people, you have to believe that,"
