Ran is not happy to be here. He hates parties. Alright, he hates socializing in general. This has never changed and never will change. Unfortunately for Ran, Molly isn't a complete misanthrope. She's going out, and therefore he has to go out also. According to Molly it's Halloween, which is why Ran is wearing a costume. Not just any costume.

A cow costume. It basically amounts to footie jammies, with black cow spots on a white background. He doesn't have to suffer udders, but he's wearing floppy cow ears on his head and mittens on his hands. There's a giant bell around his neck that makes noise when he walks, and he can feel his tail dragging behind him. It takes a lot to make Ran want to hide in a corner, but this was doing it. He's only eighteen but right now he looks twelve and completely uncomfortable.

Molly is so high. Molly is all of the high. Which is why she isn't paying a lot of attention to her guardian. There are so many people here. This, she imagines, is a lot what sex is like. Or something like that. This is perfect. Her Calling -- this is what she needs. This fixes her on a fundamental level, listening to everything, seeing how it all connects.

But then she finds herself back with the other half of her costume. The silly half. She is the sexy half, see.

"You could like, at least try to look like you don't want to go die in the corner or something," she says, but then is distracted by something shiny going on somewhere else.

"But I do want to go die in a corner," he points out, arms still crossed over his chest. It stops the bell from making too much noise. He wishes he could rip it off, but the bell was always part of the package. The rest of it was negotiable, but he chose the footie jammies over a pair of briefs and the ears alone.

Wouldn't you?

"You look cute," he says, trying to compliment her. He's hoping if he's nice she'll end his humiliation earlier. If he were interested in picking up girls he certainly wouldn't be able to do it in this outfit.

"And you totally look like you think that if you compliment me that I'll totally let you off the hook earlier, but you'd think that you would have seriously noticed --" Molly freezes, staring off at a throng of people. Right. Talking to Ran. Not dissecting exactly what is going on over there even though she has to -- "noticed like, oh my gawd, I like, don't even know what I'm talking about and stuff, do you like, want a drink or something?"

Which is nicer than she could be, considering. Then again, she might also put something in the drink, only to make things more interesting in the long run.

Really, though, she wants to go over to the punch bowl so she can get a better look at all that.

He nods his head. At least at parties like this no one pays attention to his age. He's not anywhere near twenty-one after all, and in the cow suit he looks even younger. Jail-bait, actually. His lack of height doesn't help matters much.

"A drink might help this. I'll feel less like a fucking moron." Although he has to admit, the costume really is comfortable. He might start walking back alleys in it to see if people try to accost him. Then he can have a really good reason for bashing their skulls in.

Maybe Molly did him a favor.

"Although, really, like, if you think about it, it's only going to make you like more of a moron," Molly says, tossing her braids side to side. One could say the same thing about her coke habit, but hey, that's what's keeping her from stabbing herself in the eye with a pencil, just like mom, so no one better even think about that. Even if right now, it's brought her to the point where she can't control the Calling at all ( ... )

"It's a party. That's what humans do at parties. They tell nasty fucking falsehoods about one another." This is why Ran avoids people. Although he doesn't dislike Molly's way of handling them. He's not fond of manipulation himself, but he knows she's good at it, and if the human race is stupid enough to take the bait, who is he to stop her.

"Anything interesting, or is it just this girl fucked this guy but was dating this other guy." That's how gossip usually works, he's found. Ran doesn't have a great deal of knowledge about normal human interactions. He's avoided them, and it's worked out thus far.

"There's like totally some interesting stuff," Molly says, smiling to herself. She doesn't elaborate; he doesn't need to know exactly what's going on. It's not like he has a brain between his ears to understand it anyway. She had to get saddled with the stupid guardian.

Then again, once he's -- she stares, losing her train of thought. Too many things to listen to. Too much to understand. Once he's been his share of shits and giggles, she'll take care of the situation.

It's not like he's an innocent. "Gossip tends to tell you a lot more than what the actual words say. Who's saying what about whom is really the more important part." She blinks, suddenly realizing her words weren't coming out right. "But like, whatever."

"Snorted just a little too much tonight?" he asks, and it really is out of interest and a bit of concern. If she dies there's a good chance he will, and he has absolutely no desire to kick the bucket anytime soon. Or in the next couple of decades or so.

He had to get addled with the self-destructive, drug-addled Ward.

He doesn't hate her, and that's the part he dislikes the post. She annoys him certainly, but he's basically stuck with her, and she's not the worst. At least she doesn't actually like all the things she pretends she does. He understands why she likes gossip of course. It's all about people.

"Just like, a little," she says, giggling at his words. It really must be obvious. Well, no, the fact that it's obvious to him doesn't mean much at all, considering the ward bond he's got going on. She doesn't think she's acting that much out of character for herself. "It keeps me from being able to like, narrow down my Calling which means that I can't focus, so yeah."

She laughs again, flipping her braids. "But like, whatever, I should totally be allowed to have some fun every once in a while, no matter what Dad says or anything. Oh, by the way, hope you don't have Christmas plans or anything."

"Yes, I absolutely do," he mutters sarcastically, taking off one of the black and white fluffy mittens. His fingers are beginning to sweat uncomfortably. Well, all of his body is, but he's not likely to strip down in the middle of the party.

"I've just got loads of relatives waiting to hang out with me." He's an orphan, and his angel side of the family pretty much hates him. Maybe he shouldn't have been such a pain growing up, but he didn't want to behave himself.

"What's happening at Christmas?"

"Like, put that back on, right now," Molly says, smacking at his fingers. He's not getting out of the costume he chose so easily. "And we're like, going to my family reunion so you can be made fun of for exactly how dumb you are and I can like, be made fun of for not having killed you yet."

The funny part is, she's not joking.

"Or, I could like, lock you in the bathroom again. 'Coure, the reunion's in Japan, so that'd probably kill you."

He sighs and puts it back on. Arguing with Molly never seems to get him anywhere, unfortunately. He's better off just doing what she says and misbehaving when she's not looking.

"I think I'll pass on being locked up again." He really hadn't liked it. Especially when she'd been on that date.

Ran really didn't like sexual interaction of any kind.

"So being mocked it is. Merry Christmas to us. Should I bake some cookies?" Ran can't cook.

Like Molly really cares about what Ran thinks about all of it. In the end, she'll do what she wants. When she gives him "choices" they're not even really choices for him. It's usually just one humiliation over the other. Because apparently, she can't get enough humiliation out of him.

"If you're like too bad, I'll have to totally lock you up in the hotel, anyway," she says. "But if you're good, I might even like give you a Christmas present or something."

Like she doesn't give him enough already. More than he deserves, that's for sure.

Ran's hard to humiliate too. He doesn't have much of a sense of shame, even now. Sure he's in a ridiculous costume, but it's more about it being hot and not about wanting to be here than anything else. If she told him to wear it in the bedroom and turned the fan on really high, it wouldn't bother him much at all.

"I'll be good." He usually is, actually. He's far better behaved than the rest of the family, evisceration tendencies aside. "I have to start back at school I think. Someone saw me walking around outside the other day and asked me why I wasn't in classes..."

"That's what you said last time," Molly says, raising an eyebrow at Ran. Of course, he was good last time. That didn't keep her from locking him in the bathroom anyway. But whatever. Christmas is still a long time away, and it's always possible to lock him in the bathroom for part of the reunion, but not all of it.

"And look where it ended you up."
