no matter the distance i want you to know that deep down inside of me you are my fire the one desire

There is a young girl skipping through Grant Park. She has a wireless PS3 controller in one hand. The other hand, she holds up close to her face, the distorted doll heads on her fingers letting off some pretty serious psychic disturbance. To some, it might seem like indistinct chattering. Others might hear distinct words, but the language is likely ( Read more... )

Kaden's also in the office. This is completely normal, for him, however; he puts in a good 20 hours during Saturday and Sunday alone, mostly because at the beginning of the week he's pretty much unable to work due to classes. Plus, he likes not dealing with a large number of coworkers. It lets him experiment on his subjects in peace ( ... )

"Can you even imagine the kind of paperwork you need to explain why you lost a couple of pounds of C4 and some napalm?" Ash asks vaguely. She stares down into her coffee cup and then over at his. She watches Peyton still go through the files. She imagines the woman knows she's being watched, but doesn't want to deal with them. It's an embarrassing enough situation on its own. "Of course, she's not the one who's actually at fault here."

Ash sighs, letting more of her weight rest against the threshold. "Not like she can prove it, though."

Kaden raises his eyebrows, taking another sip of his coffee. "I guess not," he says, "given that most of that paperwork isn't done by me." Also given that he has yet to lose some sort of expensive lab equipment -- or, really, anything at all ( ... )

If Ash had answered, it would have been the same answer she always gives him. I don't think I'll ever get tired of not answering ya, sweetie.

There are things people need to know and things they don't. Kaden needs to know that she knows things, but he doesn't need to know why or how she knows them. No one needs to. It doesn't matter. Well, it does. It does on a deep, carnal level. It does if she wants to keep her autonomy.

But for Kaden? No. It does not matter. There is nothing he needs to know. Instead, she'll just study his interaction with Peyton. Yes, there's paperwork that needs to be done, but this could be interesting.

Peyton turns, regarding Kaden with a stare. "It's sweet to see someone take interest in my work," she says coolly, "but I don't think I need your services at the moment." She has to think she's being rather good to him. Her gut reaction, trained into her from that very, very young age is to disable someone who deliberately gets so close to her personal space.

She tilts her head just a bit to the side, regarding him for a long moment. "You're from the labs."

Kaden shrugs, leaning back slightly, though he's not going to stop leaning on her desk. It's just enough that he can't quite read the papers anymore. This is giving her personal space and respect. She wasn't using that corner of her desk anyway. "I wasn't offering my services," he says amiably. "Just curious."

He mimics the headtilt when she speaks again, then nods. "Yes," he says, "though I do have an office just down the hall." Not that he's ever in it more than at max a few hours a day. "Nice to have established that we do, indeed, work in the same building." Mmm, sarcasm.

Peyton rolls her eyes, turning around and leaning against the file cabinet. Part of her wants to know if this guy has a deathwish. No one needs to be looking at her files, especially not when she's pretty sure someone screwed something up and managed to botch her whole operation. That's juts asking to have the blame pinned on you.

"That's just lovely," she says breezily. She's tempted to tell him that perhaps he should reserve his curiosity for people who aren't having a bad day and know over fifty ways to kill someone with their bare hands, but she should be nice to her coworkers. "Is there a reason you're in mine instead?"

Kaden doesn't have a deathwish, but he also doesn't have quite enough fear, either. Especially not for someone who works with people who could kill you with their right hand whilst drinking with their left -- and that's not including those who use guns. Besides, he's pretty good at getting out of blame, so far. He doesn't think this woman could do any worse to him than his own family, as far as that part's concerned. The attacking, sure; the blaming, less so.

He shrugs, taking another gulp of coffee. "Your office is between the coffee maker and mine," he says, "and I figure I should get to know my coworkers a little bit better. Instead of lurking in the labs all the time. Besides, your door was open, and I was curious."
