Buildings and bridges are made to bend in the wind to withstand the world...

A car loaded with teenagers pulls up in front of the Conrad. Finding parking in downtown Chicago is never easy, and Buffy is not willing to wait. She springs out of the car and races into the lobby - only to realize that while she knows the basement is where they keep the wanderers, she has no idea how to get there. Um.

The Doctor is wandering ( Read more... )

Parks are where they keep the Hawkeses. At the moment, he is sitting on a bench, surrounded by ducks who are trying to bite his ankles in order to get at the bread in his hands. Some random person told him that was what people tended to do in parks and seeing as there has to be something better than tryin' to kill things, he figured he'd try it out.

...Thus far, it's more fun for the ducks than it is for him.

Well, Vansen, if one of your life's goals was to see a 6'3 InVitro being attacked by ducks... That goal has been fulfilled.

Vansen kind of expected to find Hawkes in the park. What she did not expect were the fucking ducks.

And sure, she could rescue him, but right now, she's just going to stand back a couple yards, fold her arms over her chest, and watch. Come on, it's kind of hilarious, in a sad, confused puppy sort of way.

HAWKES DOES NOT FIND THIS HILARIOUS AT ALL. HE RAN AWAY FROM THE INVITRO ACADEMY BEFORE ANYONE TAUGHT HIM ABOUT DUCKS.

Thankfully, even with ducks attacking him and him frantically throwing bread at them like their tiny grenades made of dough, his situational awareness isn't shit, so he notices Vansen.

"Vansen!" he shouts, looking vaguely startled and slightly anxious. SHE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE HIS SIX. HAVING HIS SIX INCLUDES PROTECTING HIM FROM PSYCHOTIC WATER FOWL.

This is about when Vansen has to stop and choke back a laugh. He just sounds almost on the verge of panic. Because of ducks.

"What do you expect me to do about it?" she calls, more than a hint of amusement in her tone. 'Cause... come on. DUCKS. ...which brings up the question of how he got attacked by rabid water fowl in the first place.

"I. DON'T. KNOW." He can handle a Hammerhead even when taking incoming. He's the best natural shooter on the Saratoga. ALL TOLD, HE KIND OF REALIZES HIS FAILURE HERE IS SOMEWHAT RIDICULOUS.

"Get a stick and beat them?" He offers out of a lack of any other suggestions- he's pretty sure there's a moral and ethical problem with beating ducks with sticks, but, uh, he's desperate. "And do it quick, 'cause I'm almost outta bread."

Vansen snorts, unable to entirely hold back her laughter for much longer. Oh god. This is the best thing she's seen in a long time. She finally steps forward and wades into the ducks, shooing them away and nudging a few stubborn ones away with a foot when they won't take the hint.

"You know they won't bite or anything. You could probably step on them." Not that she's advising a giant InVitro should step on more or less innocent waterfowl, but she thought she should point it out.

Hawkes takes advantage of the retreat to throw the bread in the hopes that it will keep them from coming back and probably risks getting poked fun of more, because he just threw that bread like he was throwing a grenade.

He plops back down on the bench and looks immensely displeased. This is not funny. This is so many kinds of not funny.

"I didn't wannna hurt 'em," he points out with a slight pout. Come on, Vansen. They were tiny agents of doom and death.

Vansen is still snickering as she moves to sit beside him, keeping an eye on the ducks to make sure they don't go and ambush Hawkes again. She's not sure if she'd stop them if they did, or just advise him to run...

"Why were you feeding ducks anyway? They usually leave you alone if you don't give them food..."

"I see people doin' it all the time and they don't get mauled," he protests indignantly, crossing his arms over his chest. "Some old lady offered me some bread. What was I supposed to do with it?"

...Other than eat it. He tried that. It was stale. Not even the pot roast could save it.

Vansen pauses a moment. Looks at Hawkes. Looks at the ducks. And then just shakes her head. "I think you're just not an animal person, Coop. Try a safer hobby. Like... I don't know. Gardening? The Prophet seems like the type to have gardens around somewhere."

...if you were looking for someone to be helpful, Coop, Vansen might not be the best person. At least, not on this subject. She'll always have your six, but there's only so much help she can give you with ducks.
