Round here, we're carving out our names. Round here, we all look the same.

Chicago's never been a quiet city, since it became a city at all, and today is no exception. Things are happening, people are doing things.

Steve is in the Coffee Shop. He just got out of a meeting with a loan officer and a guy with a building to lease out. They're both supernatural folks themselves, so they're a bit more appreciative of the ( Read more... )

Hello, Annie. Have a self-professed spiritual counselor, who has appeared beside your table, clutching a cup of coffee.

"It's difficult to know where to begin, isn't it?" he asks warmly. "I don't envy you your position."

Annie glances up and frowns. She's... pretty sure she doesn't know this bloke. Actually, she's positive she doesn't know this bloke. So the question is...

"Sorry, do I know you?" It's asked pleasantly enough, but she's totally ready to kick your ass if you're some sort of creep, Rafael, and don't you forget it.

"No, not yet," Rafi admits, with a patient smile and a vague shrug of his shoulders. "Forgive me. Sometimes I get carried away and I forget the important things. Like introductions."

He offers a hand, and another smile. "Rafael Navarro. I'm... something of a spiritual counselor, and a student of humanity. Sometimes, I look at a person, or I walk by them, and I understand things. I'd just like to hear your story. Maybe help if I can. I mean no harm, I promise."

Annie laughs a little, and shakes his hand firmly. "Oh, why not? Can't hurt anything, I suppose. I'm Annie, Annie Cartwright."

She gestures to the chair across from her. "Sit down, then. Would you like some coffee?"

"That's very gracious of you," he replies, taking the offered seat. "Thank you, Annie. You may call me Rafi, if you like. All my friends do. And I would love some coffee--again, thank you."

He regards her thoughtfully. "It seems to me you have a decision you're struggling with. Information you wish to give to someone you care about."

Annie motions to the waitress for another cup of coffee, and then purses her lips a bit, thoughtfully.

"My friends... bosses..." Hm, this needs better definition. "Back home, in Manchester, I was a WD-- a DC." They don't make mention of the "woman" part anymore, she needs to remember that. "A detective constable. My DI, detective inspector, and my DCI - that's detective chief inspector - are both here. And they're... in a bit of a relationship."

Which is both weird and completely natural for the two of them at the same thing. She guesses they've always been sort of circling each other in that weird way they had. "It's just... back home, Sam - the DI - and I, we had a bit of a flirt now and again. And now I think... I don't know about Sam, but I think the Guv feels all guilty or sommat because we'd had a bit of a flirt, but now he's... involved with Sam, even though it was only ever flirting, and..."

She sighs. "I really do like Sam, but they're... I don't mind. I don't need to be with Sam to be happy, and he doesn't need ( ... )

Rafi listens intently as Annie explains the situation, watching her, nodding every so often to indicate he's following along. The only time his attention is diverted from her is when the waitress arrives with a cup of coffee, and then it's just long enough for Rafi to nod and smile his thanks up at her before his gaze goes right back to Annie.

"I don't envy you the situation," he says sympathetically, stirring sugar into his coffee. "But I find it admirable that you want to clear the air, and make things understood between the three of you. Not many people would have that courage, Annie."

He purses his lips, regarding her. "Do the three of you continue to work together here? Romantic and personal relationships are always much more complicated in the workplace. And have they really not made it public knowledge that they are together? Do you know simply because you're so close to them, and you can read them, rather than because they themselves have said so?"
