For as much as Dean loves his car, and for as grateful as he is that she managed to make it through the Rift with him, she doesn't make for the best sleeping arrangements. The backseat is cozy enough for other things, sure, but Dean's not exactly

God, and he's cute when he grins like that. JD would facepalm at himself if it wouldn't be an incredibly obvious gesture of exasperation that would require an explanation. It'd be really useful to have someone slap me in the face every time I start to ramble too much. Must. Not. Daydream about it.
He reaches out and takes hold of his hand, shaking it a bit weakly for several reasons. "Oh! A job! Well. If you really need it, I've got connections. Not that I usually go around offering my connections to random guys on the street. You just look like... my friend. Nate. Anyway. My connections aren't that cool. Do you know what sort of job you're looking for? We can- You can walk and I'll sort of... walk with you so I don't hold you up. I'm bored so I'm taking a jaunty stroll around the city is all."

Dean's not stupid; he's been able to tell since he was a teenager when someone likes him, male or female. His ego helps a bit, too.
"Strolling's good," Dean agrees, and they start to walk. "Mostly I'm just lookin' to pay the bills," he says. "My brother and I... well, we can't really charge people for what we do, and the usual... methods are sorta out. So," Dean says, offering another charming smile. "What kind of connections have you got, man?"

It doesn't help that JD tends to be rather obvious when he's attracted to someone. He rambles with anyone, but the disjointed talking only tends to happen when cute boy/girl is making him trip over his words.
"Yeah. I like a good... stroll." JD eyes Dean sideways. "What is it that your brother and you do? Sorry. Too fast with the questions. If it's something covert and you can't tell me, I understand."
The charming smile does not make JD melt in the least. No, not at all. This is so very unfair.
"I'm friends with the owner of the Conrad Hotel, actually," he admits with a smile. He was better friends with Ariel, but Ariel... went away. Martha is always willing to help though. "I used to work there a few months ago. They understand unique... situations and stuff."

He has a good enough feeling about the guy that he's willing to tell him the truth; he's just not entirely sure he'll believe him.
"Sam and I are staying over there," Dean adds. "It's a nice place." When Dean's not storming out of it, anyway.

Cute and knows his villains. Nice. JD approves.
"Stone-cold and unkillable. And he kills all those naked teens just having sex. That's not nice of him. Which I guess is the point of being evil."
He turns to look at Dean when he says that. "Seriously?" There's a slightly excited squeak to his voice. "Dude, that's awesome. I've met so many cool people here that do awesome things and have awesome powers. And I'm sure there are words other than awesome to describe it, but I'm all in awe over the awesome."
JD smiles. "Really? I stayed there for so long. In the basement first, and then there were complications so we had to move up to the rooms upstairs... you're- Oh, God, you are a- I mean, you know about the basement, right? So you're staying there for free? I figured since you talked about hunting evil that you'd... that you were either a Wanderer, or angel, or something. I'm going to come off as the craziest person right now if not..."

"It is pretty awesome," Dean agrees. "I don't have any powers exactly, but I've got a hell of a right hook. And I don't know much about any of that," he adds. "Only came through here recently. Sam 'n I are still tryin' to find our feet, I guess. But trust me -" he stops a second to look right at JD - "I definitely don't think you're crazy."
Little on the rambly side, sure. But Dean can handle that just fine.

"Hey, fighting is awesome enough. I mean, if you get me around evil, I run around in circles or hide in a corner until it goes away. Usually the hiding thing." He grins wide. It's not actually common that people don't think he's crazy upon a first meeting. "Good. I'd hate to make you think I was."
JD takes a look around the street trying to figure out where they are in Chicago. He hasn't been paying attention.
"I can't believe you don't know about the basement and you live in the Conrad. You don't pay for the room, do you? Cause you shouldn't have to as wanderers we can stay there and eat for free. An angel called Brando set it up a long time ago. Or so I heard. It's like legend."

"That's most people's reaction to what I do," Dean says reassuringly. "It's not the easiest job. Has its perks, though," he adds with an indulgent grin.
"Didn't exactly get a brochure when I rode in through the big portal, man," Dean points out. "And Sam and I have spent most of our time tryin' to get back out, you know?"
Which Dean has pretty much accepted as hopeless. Could be worse, he guesses.

He smiles at the grin. "Like what kind of perks? Just curious cause it's something I'd... never be able to experience. I like to live vicariously when I can."
JD makes a face. "Damn. I was in the process of making one before everything went all to hell. It had pictures and everything. Hand drawn, but not everyone can read, especially not everyone that comes through the Rift. I was trying to cover bases, and then... everything went to hell."
There's a second where he pauses. He hasn't thought about getting back through the Rift for months. It doesn't help that he spends most of his alone time living in a world where he creates illusions of everyone that exists in his world. If they're all 'here', there's nothing to miss.
"Yeah," JD says, softly. "Some damn, smart people were working on that when I first came through. They haven't... figured it out yet, but you never know. We could get back. Do you miss your world a lot?"
Reply
"Sort of a long story how I got into hunting," Dean tells him, "but it's always been rough, you know, tryin' to stay alive and keep my family alive - but there's somethin' rewarding about really helping people. Plus," Dean says, brushing aside all the sap, "Girls tend to be grateful when you save them from whatever evil's terrorizing them that week. Just sayin'."
"That's too bad," Dean says. "I'm used to a different place every week, but a place like this - it really could convince me to sit down 'n read something for more than research. I mean, the whole angels thing alone..." Dean shakes his head. It's all pretty crazy to him still, which is maybe why he tends to stick around the hotel most of the time.
"I..." Dean starts. Thing is, Dean doesn't know how he feels about his world - how he feels about a place where his dad's going to die and who even knows what else that Sam hasn't told him. Sometimes he suspects they might be better here, stuck here together. "I miss parts of it," Dean says finally, rubbing uncomfortably at his neck. "But I guess... I guess it's not all bad, you know?"
Dean spent his life moving one town to the next, never really having a steady set of friends or much of anything beyond a little brother to take care of. So, he's kind of got blind optimism down pat.

"There's enough crazy here to last anyone. Angels, demons, weird creatures and objects that fall through the Rift..." He nods and looks out into the distance. "I found a toaster-radio once. And a lot more stuff that I couldn't figure what they were so I named them after Smurfs."
JD glances at him sympathetically when he trails off. "Yeah. It's... not. Bad. I mean, you get used to it after awhile." Except the part where some people don't. Some people still can't accept it over a year later. "You don't miss home as much, cause you start to build one here."
Reply
"Really?" Dean asks. Aside from the Tardis, most objects have managed to stay pretty normal. The people, on the other hand... well. "So what happens when you run out of Smurfs?"
"Hope you're right, man," Dean says, in a sort of quiet way that means he's thinking way, way too much. "So," he says, deflecting the subject a bit. "Where's home for you? Before, I mean," he clarifies.
Reply
"I don't know. Haven't thought that far ahead yet. Maybe I'll start naming them after candy. Mm." JD likes candy.
He looks over at Dean and offers him a sympathetic smile. JD hopes he's right, too.
"Oh! Well. I grew up in Ohio, but I moved to California to go to medical school. I was working at a hospital there when I got sucked through. How about you? Or were you always moving from city to city even as a kid? That kinda had to suck a little."
Reply
"Medical school, huh? That's pretty awesome. I was born in Kansas," Dean says, his voice lowering on the word. "But we - I haven't been back since I was a little kid. Bad memories 'n all that." To say the absolute least.
Dean shrugs, like it's not a big deal, but it's pretty obvious it is. "Never had much of a place to call home. Unless you count the Impala," he jokes.
