The side of the ship where the iceberg rips

Eloi is half-asleep on a couch in the common room, and today, he has his wings out. He usually does not put himself in a position to be caught off-guard, such as the one he is in now (he's having a good deal of trouble simply keeping his eyes open); however, the nightmares he's experienced ever since he was fourteen have intensified recently. Ever ( Read more... )

Martha Jones doesn't sleep. Not really. Not without help from medication.

So she wakes from a drug induced sleep at entirely the wrong hour and finds herself in the common room, leaning against a wall.

She's always thought the angels looked so magnificent with their wings out. Awe-inspiring. Martha tries not to stare as she settles herself in a chair with an Irish coffee between her hands.

"There let my way appear, steps unto heaven; All that Thou sendest me..."

Abruptly, Eloi stops singing, acutely aware that there's someone else in the room with him. Tensing, he urges himself to wakefulness, then relaxes. It's Dr. Jones. She's definitely on their side. She's...

Eloi freezes, staring at Martha with wide eyes, mouth hanging open slightly. ...It can't be...

Martha blinks.

She is not quite used to being stared at. Not like this anyway, and she doesn't know how to respond.

"What... what is it?" She keeps his gaze, because she's faced down the Master. A little wide-eyed staring certainly won't make her look away. "I didn't mean to wake you. Sorry. If I did."

Eloi breaks eye contact with her first. "It's... nothing. And... I wasn't asleep. I'm trying *not* to sleep, actually..."

It's been eighty-four years. Not one hint in all that time, and now, within days of arriving at the Conrad Hotel, there's that... connection he's been looking for? *Waiting* for. It's definitely not a coincidence.

He stopped believing coincidences a long time ago, after all.

All vestiges of his lack of sleep are gone now. He sits up slowly, rubbing his forehead. "You're Martha, right? The hotel's doctor."

Sally has been trying not to sneak up on people, but she can't always help it. This time, however, she actually manages not to appear just behind Eloi.

He looks rather like a puppy, flopped on the couch like that. To her, anyway.

She gets closer, and picks up on the sound of singing. She listens as intently as she can, until she figures out what it is he's singing.

"That's pretty," she says finally. "A hymn, right? I think they used to sing it in my grandmother's church."

"'Nearer My God to Thee'," Eloi mumbles in reply. "The first class string quartet played it as the Titanic was going down, though there was no-one there to sing it with them at the time." He blinks and sits up.

"How're things?" he asks Sally, almost scooting over to offer her a seat next to him. Then he remembers she can't actually sit down. He glances away, blushing slightly.

She won't comment about that. Because... depressing, and she really doesn't know how to handle them. And because she doubts he wants to linger on it.

"Well, could be worse." She grins and sits in front of the couch - if he's sitting and they're just chatting... it's not too bad. Really. "I met this girl, Toshiko? And she's going to build me a computer and create a voice recognition software so I can use it without having to be solid."

She's excited about this. Really excited.

"That's great, Sally," Eloi says, smiling. "So you'll have a way to keep and read journals now?"

A slight yawn escapes him, and he hastily covers his mouth. "Oh. Sorry. I didn't get much sleep last night. Nightmares came back... Woke up in the middle of the night and didn't want to go back to sleep... Happens more often than I would like it to."
