Yunho breathed out, wincing a little bit at the cramped sensation he felt on his lower back. It was the first time he walked out of the room since his surgery.  His leg was fine with the cast, but he still felt sharp surges of pain when he misplaces too much weight on his foot.

He inhaled and gripped the handles of his walker as he eyed the end of the hallway, in his condition, it seemed like a far longer distance than it actually was.  Barely a few steps and he heard a distressed cry from a familiar voice, “Jung Yunho!”

He turned to find Mihyung, the head nurse of the floor, casting him a reprimanding but worried look.

“What are you doing? You’re supposed to be resting!”

Yunho rolled his eyes, scratching the side of his temple with an embarrassed smile,  “Relax noona, doctor Lee told me I should exercise.”

“Yes, exercise, but I think he meant walking a few rounds around your room, not around the whole floor!”

“I’ve been doing rounds inside my room for the past two days, I think I can handle it,” it almost sounds like a whine.

“Yunho, if you push yourself too hard-“

“Noona,” he used one of his hands and placed it on the concerned nurse’s shoulder and bent down to look her in the eye. “I’m fine.  I won’t get any better if I don’t push myself. Trust me, I’m the athletic superstar remember? I wasn’t even due to walk until a few more days, but look who proved them wrong.” He flashed a charming smile before standing up and giving her a thumbs up.

Mihyung couldn’t help but smile at the patient’s charming persuasion. She resigned her opposition, nodding as he let’s Yunho take a few more steps.

---

The second time Yunho went out of his room, he made it far enough to the nurse’s station. He almost opened his mouth to brag about his speedy accomplishment but the sight in the guest lounge grabbed his attention.  He saw a young man, who he thought was probably about his age, sitting in one of the sofas. A book was resting on the lap, and by his side, was a bag of oatmeal cookies. He had jet black hair contrasting his pale skin and red lips that cutely moved as he chewed his snack.

Yunho paused to look at him, who seemed to be trapped in his own world. He smiled as the boy’s expression changed from puzzled to surprise. No way, Yunho could read from his lips as the young man’s eyes screened the book. It must’ve been a great plot twist, what he’s reading, Yunho thought.

The next day, Yunho made it as far as the nurse’s station again, this time he had fixed his hair, no longer tousled from the pillow of the bed, and he was wearing his favorite shirt instead of the pajamas the  hospital provided. He saw the young man again, sitting on the lounge, not anymore with a book, this time he had earphones plugged in either side of his ears, his hands were cupping a large plastic mug with his fingers tapping it to the beat of the song.

Yunho paused again, just looking at him. He didn’t know how long it took but the boy sitting in the lounge finally looked back at him. Yunho gave a small smile and he responded with a confused nod and a small curve on his lips, before staring away and going back to tappping his fingers to the rhythm only he can hear.

Yunho went to sleep that night remembering the soft eyes that he regretfully only caught for half a second.

A week passed and Yunho can already do at least two rounds on the floor, and every day he sees the young man in the same spot, sometimes he’s reading a book or listening to music, other times he’ scribbling on his notebook and one time Yunho had caught him playing with the long strands of his long black bangs.

For some reason he feels familiar with the stranger in the guest lounge, it didn’t make sense but there was something comforting about the way Yunho saw him there every time he goes out to exercise. Even then though, nothing but quick glances and small smiles chance between them.

One day when Mihyung brings Yunho medicine, he finally asked about the young man. “Noona who is that guy?”

“What guy?” the nurse said in passing as she laid down the painkillers and helped Yunho sit up.

“The guy who’s always sitting on the sofas near the nurse’s sation.”

Mihyung smiled. She already knew who Yunho meant but she decided she wanted to tease him, “Who?”

The patient sighed, “Come on noona! The pretty guy who sits in the exact same spot and likes chewing his lips.”

“You think he’s pretty?” The nurse stared back at him with an amused glint in her eyes.

“Noona!” Yunho grabbed hold of his pill and chugged it down with water quickly, “Is he a patient? Why is he here all the time?”

“No, he’s not a patient. That young man is Kim Jaejoong.”

Kim Jaejoong.

---

Jaejoong had always felt comfortable in hospitals. Not everybody would think the same. Hospitals were places tainted with memories of sadness, sickness and death, but not for Jaejoong. Hospitals, more specifically the hospital whe was currently sitting in, was practically home. He grew up playing towers with the stacks of bandages in the store room, he grew up riding the elevators up and down, he grew up going to the viewing panel for operation rooms to watch his mother or father or sometimes both do operations.

Every nurse knew his name, he’d tried every flavor of lollipop in they offered in the pediatrics ward and most of his presents from childhood were from the gift station on the first floor. He had studied for exams at every café on all the hospital wings and he knew each floor like the back of his hand.

Being the love child of, who back then were busy, residents, Jaejoong didn’t know any better than this world of white jackets, stethoscopes and smell of sanitizing gel.

He usually waited long hours until his father finished up his rounds so they could go home together, however this time Jaejoong was waiting for something quite different from that.

He galnced at the hall for the nth time before going back to his book. A minute later, he looked again, eyes expecting and somewhaat disappointed after not being able to see whom he was expecting. He bit his lip as he tapped the finger on his book, looking again as he heard a door open and close, but still, his wait had come to no avail, it was only a guest visiting a patient at room 704.

Who he was waiting for came from room 702. Room 702 which door he had tried walking over to and knocking on several times but didn’t have the courage to.

“He’s not coming you know.”

Jaejoong jerked at the sound of the voice and his cheeks warmed up at getting caught with his waiting game. He caught Mihyung smiling that entertained smile at him. He ignores the nurse and goes back to his book and pretending to read.

“He has an evaluation today and doctor Lee has been keeping him in the physical therapy floor since this afternoon.”

No response.

“I don’t know what time he’s going to be back but I don’t think it’s any time soon.

Jaejoong flips a page, biting his lips even harder.

The nurse chuckles quietly to herself,  “Okay, okay. You’re not interested then, I’ll keep quiet now.”

Mihyung didn’t even have to wait a minute before she found Jaejoong leaning his elbows to  the counter with a pout planted on his lips. “Noona” he says in a serious voice.

“Yes, Joongie?”

“What’s his name?”

“Who?”

“Miracle boy!”

Jaejoong stares expectedly at the nurse who tilts her head, “Miracle boy?”

“Yes, Miracle Boy! I have never seen anyone barely making it to the nurse’s station to walking three rounds of the whole floor in just a week!”

The nurse laughs again, “Why don’t you actually ask him?”

He huffs.

“You know, he asked me about your name too.”

Something in Jaejoong’s eyes suddenly goes brighter. “Really?”

“Yes, now promise you’ll talk to him after telling you his name? He’s been quite lonely.”

Jaejoong looks down before looking back at the nurse to answer, “Promise”

---

The hall is barely lit when Yunho walked out of his room again. He adjusted his walker and yawned as he made his way to his usual route. After his therapy session for the whole afternoon, he couldn’t sit still, knowing just how much progress he’d already made.

There was no one at the nurses’ counter at that time, the night shift probably doing their rounds or taking a quick break. When he reached the station his eyes bolted in surprise as he stared back at equally startled eyes. It was Jaejoong, still sitting in his normal spot.

The two slowly calmed down at the recognition of their faces. With nothing left to do, Yunho smiled awkwardly and slowly makes a move to where Jaejoong is.

“Hey.”

A/N: OH MY GOSH. From the time I locked my stories, a lot of people have been commenting and sending me messages. I'm so sorry I never got to respond but I decided I hated my fics so I didn't want to show them anymore. I also have a lot of unfinished things, and I didn't want to just leave them hanging so I closed them off to everyone. Sorry. :(

But good news? I'm writing again! I hope you guys enjoy it. :)

PS: I'm actually writing something simultaneously with this one. I think I like that better. Lol. Will probably post it tomorrow. ^_^
