i love it when a plan comes together. and by "a plan" i mean "two stories at once". i spent all of today working on my space noir for 'universal constant' and i wrote about 2k, maybe more. it was the part i was basically most concerned about when setting out to write it, too, which is gratifying to have unbottled it. it's kinda funny actually, having been only casually in star trek writing for the past year or so (it's still number one in my heart, but i haven't been able to finish anything for a while, sadly) what really helped me was rereading my 'arena' reboot from last year. that was like... eye-opening, i guess? to feel that connection with the way i write jim and spock again, to remember that i do actually know how to write them even in an AU setting, which i think was what was tripping me up about this story and i didn't even know it.
and i've been churning out this x-men AU too. 6500 words since monday, and the entire rest of it is just sitting in my brain waiting to be typed out. (if you're on the meme it's in post #2, i am not de-anon'ing until it's finished but you can probably guess if you try, lol.... i'm not very good at disguise.) but that's pretty awesome too, i haven't had that happen to me in a long time. it's funny (to me anyway) that it was an AU prompt that snagged my attention, because usually i really love the canon stuff. but i read the prompt and went OMG I MUST WRITE THAT, lol. yay!
we're just going to ignore for the moment that i still have no fucking clue what i'm writing for my big bang. at this point i feel like it's going to be one of four things :
- a continuation of last year's big bang, set after jim comes home from wasting nero, before he goes back out into space. would focus on his relationship with winona and how he manages trying to get spock to agree to be his first officer.
- a continuation of the space noir for UC. what i'm submitting for UC is only part of the story, so i could go ahead and write the rest of it. would have to wait to see what sort of response the bit i'm putting in the zine receives, but it's definitely a possibility.
- another episode reboot like i did with 'arena'. i've been wanting to tackle 'conscience of the king' for awhile, could also do 'city on the edge of forever' or 'space seed'. something appropriately epic that will allow me to continue on the themes of "what the hell are starfleet's ethics and the story of how pike and jim want to turn them on their asses".
- i know the groundhog day thing has been done in every fandom (sometimes many times) but it is intriguing to me. i would want to have it be happening to more than one person, though; maybe spock and scotty, or mccoy and uhura-- not kirk, because i think the thing i'd want to examine is him being the one who dies over and over again. but i'm not sure what i'd want the punchline of the story to be, and i feel like that's something i'd need to know before i got into it.
any of your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. XD
and with that, back to writing i go!
