gentlemen bastards : this would be the title of one of my favorite book series, by the obscenely talented scott lynch. imagine if ocean's eleven were set in renaissance-era venice with magic, and you have the gentlemen bastards series. it's hilarious, the capers are amazing, the plot twists are always surprising (and often yank your heartstrings very hard) and you literally cannot put them down until you're finished. the third book in what is scheduled to be a seven-book series is due out this fall, and i couldn't be more thrilled.
hearts in atlantis : one of my very favorite stephen king books. it's so many things; a tribute to the 60s, an analysis of the vietnam war, a challenge to our generation to care about the world around us, a tie-in to the dark tower (stephen king's epic gunslinger series) but mostly it's just a book that is both familiar and comforting, and surprising every time i read it. i've read it probably five times, and i always find something new to love. it makes me cry, which is the best praise i can give to a book.
holly black : one of my favorite authors, probably my very favorite YA author. her stories are always good, her characters are round and flawed and 3D and amazing, i love the way she makes urban fantasy interesting but not wanky, and she's a fantastic writer so i always want her books to go on forever. also, she's super cool IRL, she's from the area where i went to college, and once before she became really really well known i met her (though i am sure she wouldn't remember it, lol). but i idolize her, i basically want to be her in ten years.
intergalactic equal opportunity slut : my friend douxquemiel's and my nickname for one mr. james t. kirk. 8D
makin' ponies : this... is an inside joke with some friends that came about while drunk, and wondering what gunslingers do once their gunslinging days are over. i think it involved retiring to a ranch and breeding horses... but then some innuendo came up about what the gunslingers do together with so much time on their hands... and makin' ponies became a euphemism... and then we played rock band and named the band makin' ponies.... i don't really remember, there was a lot of liquor involved, i just remember it was hilarious. >:D
pwvw : stands for "post-war, voldemort wins". a harry potter AU universe my friends and i created/envisioned where basically the order and a bunch of the students are holed up in a pair of houses somewhere deep in the british countryside, rationing magic, living like muggles and hiding from the death eaters. basically like the beginning of sleeping beauty except instead of flora, fauna and meriweather there are remus, fletcher and snape. XD it's basically an exercise in hilarity of fletcher setting the toaster on fire, draco having to ask luna to pass the salt every night at dinner, etc, etc.
riddle-master : a book trilogy by patricia mckillip, one of my all-time favorites. it's beautifully written, a really gorgeous story with great characters, lots of strong women, interesting creepy magic, and again with the making me cry thing. i got 3 fics in this fandom written for me for yuletide this year, it pretty much made my day/year/life.
sultry cuttlefish : ahahaha another drunk joke. raindissolved and i were hanging out with another friend, drinking and watching the original clash of the titans. and there's a part where athena talks about how zeus took the form of a cuttlefish to seduce her, and she says something like "he was so sultry", but we found it absolutely ridiculous and it's still funny almost six years later.
the ruck : the bar around the corner from peregrina and halfdreams' apartment. it's kind of a dive, but it used to be a stable so it's all wood paneled inside, they have multicolored christmas lights wound around the rafters, and despite that it's in new york, most of the bartenders are red sox fans (and we all being from new england/boston, that's awesomely vindicating). you can get a really good burger and basket of fries for $4, and tuesday is $2 pint night. in other words, it's the best bar in the universe.

that actually sort of ended up being an exercise in fandom pimping, so wth, i'll add fandom tags to this. everyone should read all of these books, anyway, because they're amazing. i have good taste, y'all. XD
