Chapter 11
Everyone said the night suited Guy . Everything about him dark and black but only he knew how much he craved for some light in his life, for someone to believe in him as a human being.
He tried to banish those thoughts now,. It was clearly not meant to be. No one would ever think him as anything other than Vaisey's evil henchman.
He had seen one chance and it had turned to be a lie. Marian. She still haunted his dreams, every sleepless hour, every...
"Guy, wake up! I heard hooves going along the North Road to Nottingham" Allan whispered.
"Are you sure you were not being followed?" Guy asked as he rose and grabbed his sword.
"I've been an outlaw me. I know when I'm being followed" Allan said; a little bit annoyed that his abilities were being questioned.
"I'm so sorry to burst your bubble but... You are still an outlaw!" Guy corrected him.
"Chit-chat won't get us where we need to be. So; hooves? North Road? remember?"
They headed to the road to wait for the horses to come. They stood on each side of the path holding one end of a rope each.
"You sure this is going to work?" Guy whispered.
"Ahh the old tricks are the best, " Allan assured him ; " and even if they're not, they are more than enough to fool a castle guard's brain"
"They're not that bad be fair " Guy tried in vain to defend them. Allan looked at him in disbelief.
"Ok, maybe they are a bit... simple," he admitted.
"A bit? " Allan thought; but he remained silent as the horse approached them.
They heard the thud as the rider hit their rope and was thrown from his mount.
They ran forward to see who it was; and Guy was speechless.
"Marian?" he finally managed to mutter. Oh, God! It's Marian!"
"It can't be!" Allan gasped coming closer.
"You almost killed her, you stupid son of a pig!" Guy pushed Allan aside and knelt down to tend Marian.
" Stop right there" Allan exclaimed. "You were holding the other end of the rope, remember?"
" Only because you said so, idiot!" Guy snapped
"Oh, yes and my wish is your command since when?" Allan retorted.
"Could you please stop making a fuss and help me stand up?" Marian asked from the floor.
They fell silent and looked at a pair of blue eyes staring at them. Guy offered his hand as a support and Allan fetched all her stuff.
"I'm so sorry, Lady Marian" Guy said trying to keep a distance between them.
"Oh, so,... I'm Lady Marian again. I supposed that makes you Sir Guy, right?" she said.
"Please, shoot me and end my misery at having to listen to your never ending bickering, " Allan groaned raising his eyes to heaven.
" Just one merciful arrow is all I need..."
"You're not at all funny! " Marian and Guy said in chorus.
"Oh well at least you agree about me not being funny... Excuse me but I'm heading back to the camp to put myself to bed; and by the way it's your shift, Guy," Allan told him.
"Take Marian with you. I'll join you at first light." Guy told him.
"You will not do such thing and I'm staying with you" Marian said. Guy was about to reply but she was faster. "I have something you must see".
"Allan, you can..." Guy turned around to but the outlaw had already gone.

Silence fell between them. Both unsure of how to behave. It was strange though, They had talked easily enough in the past. Even if they had been angry with each other or in disagreement they had always known what to say before; and this felt odd now.
"Nice choice of colour for a secret night time ride" Guy tried.
"If that's all you have to say, I much prefer silence, thank you, " Marian replied hurt by his not noticing she was wearing one of her gifts. Perhaps she was no longer important.
"I was trying to make some conversation, " Guy said. " It was you who insisted on staying. You said you had something for me."
"No, I said I've got something to show you but I'm not feeling like it right now," she pouted.
"Come on now Marian, this is childish," Guy scolded. " You came here in the middle of the night. So I assume it was for something important."
"It is. But I'm angry at you now" she just said crossing her arms over her chest; "and could you please make up your mind and decide if I am to be Lady Marian or simply Marian?"
"Forgive me, Marian. I was overbearing" Guy said, reminding him a ofcertain conversation that he hoped she did not recall.
"This time I was both ungrateful and overbearing. Please, accept my apologies, Guy," Marian said.
"We just can't seem to manage being together and that's a fact" Guy said half joking, half serious.
She didn't want to talk about that. She didn't want to think about the possibility of not having him near, not even as a joke and she knew what would happen if they kept on that subject. So her only chance was...
"I think the Sheriff is up to something" she said plainly.
" He's the Sheriff; his odious manner seems to be almost a part of the job. What else do we expect of him but plotting ? "
She looked at him, not really sure what to say next.
"You'd have been a very good Sheriff"
"You know that's not true, Marian... So please let's stop lying to each other" he said sadly.
"But I mean it, Guy. I really do. You were there for me, for Nottingham when everything..." he cut her off.
"That's ancient history, milady; and I messed it all up by trying to kill the King. Please, can we stop this? It's not something I'm eager to discuss especially with you. So the Sheriff..."
"He and Winchester Jr. became friends, almost like flesh and blood; and I dare say they are searching for your secret at the castle. "
"He may be luckier than we are and found it. Which means England would be damned."
Guy said.
"Really? Is it that bad?" Marian asked not clearly understanding what some letters about his feeling for her could send England to hell.
"It's even worse." Guy replied.
********
Marian let the silence settle around them again. She was carrying the wooden chest with her but she was not ready to give it back to Guy. If he finally got what he was looking for, well.. There would be nothing to prevent him him from leaving. Her mind was looking for a way of confessing her little theft without hurting this man.
"What's wrong?" Guy asked. She looked at him, wondering how he knew there was something wrong. "You have that little crinkle on the forehead and your eyes..." he tried to explain.
"I'm cold and hungry."she lied.
"You should go back home, Marian. This is not the place for a lady," he told her.
"You don't want me to be here, do you ? " she demanded.
If he was brave enough, he could have said what he was feeling but... How many times can your heart be broken? How could it happen that when he almost put all the pieces back together and start to believe he was over her; she came back into his life and turned him upside down again?
He was a man with a plan, but she was changing that.
"You are too quiet" she said.
"I'm tired. Living in the forest can be exhausting, believe me, " he announced.
"Sleep then. I'll keep watch," she told him.
He was about to say something about her being a woman that would certainly upset her; yet God knew she was not just any woman. She was the Nightwatchman. She could use a sword almost as well as himself and was a hard fighter when need be. That brought some bittersweet memories of their past...
"I lied to you" she said."I have nothing to show you"
"Then, I don't understand... Why are you here?"
"Because I want to. Because living in the castle is not the same" she admitted. "And for the first time I don't feel safe there... It's not the same as before when..."
"When Robin could save the day for you?" Guy said, pain in his voice as he spoke his rival's name.
"I'm here. With you. Robin's got nothing to do with all this" she answered as she started to shiver from head to toe.
"You, Robin and I could never coexist all together " Guy said .
"I wrote to Robin this morning" Marian went on.
"You're shaking, Marian." Guy changed the subject.
"There were things I needed to tell him before..." but he cut her off.
"I'll get you something to warm you up" he informed her as he stood up and searched
"I've a blanket hidden somewhere near those trees for the cold nights"
"Guy I'm talking to you" she exclaimed.
"And I don't want to listen, right?" he said anger boiling over. " You talking about how you and Bow Boy are planning to get married or how happy he makes you is not my favourite topic; so please stop this now or go back to the castle," he sighed; "and now I can't find bl**dy blanket!!!"
"Please, come here and sit with me" she used a nice gentle voice, the same she used when trying to charm him into something, so Guy had no doubt there was something behind her eyes... Something he couldn't figure it out yet.
"We could use my cloak for the both of us"
Guy came near to her, still unsure whether to let himself go or not... He sat by her side. She got closer to him and he could smell the perfume in her hair... That was not good at all. He must say something to break this spell that made his heart believe in a new chance with her.
He looked at the cloak's clasp and he smiled.
"I remember buying this for you" he said in that husky voice of his. Marian's heart skipped a bit. So he was pretending... and she smiled.
"I had been to Portmouth on one of Vaisey's failed attempts to find out when and where the King would be arriving.
We spent a few days there and there was a market where my guards got their meals at a very good price. I saw this clasp and it made me think of you;" he laughed.
"What's so funny?" she asked,
"You were the only thing on my mind at the time so... It shouldn't haven be a surprise if even a carrot made me think of you."
"Will you please get on with the story?" it was bothering her he had such comic vision of his love for her.
"Don't be angry with me," he pleaded. "
It's just...Oh nevermind. I bought that clasp and looked for some fabric I could turn into that cloak you are wearing as a way to persuade you to attend the Archery Contest with me."
"I'm still freezing," she said; searching for an excuse to get even closer to him.
"Please, go back to the castle" Guy begged her.
"Guy..." she whispered.
"Fine. At least let me do something to make you more comfortable."
He stood up and looked for a place beneath the trees. He started to make a heap of leaves, wide enough for both of them,. Marian shivered at the thought of being so close to Guy.
She stood up and joined him. She wanted to help but Guy stopped her and made her sit. His hands remained holding hers a bit longer than necessary. Marian let out a sigh.
"Is something wrong?" he asked going back to his task.
"Do you still need me?" He frozed at the question.
"Why don't we...?" he began, trying to avoid it.
" Do you still love me? Or care for me like you did before?"
"Marian..." he was so tired of pretending. He needed to tell her that the whole England might change after this dark era but one thing would remain; his love for her.
He was just as besotted as on the first day he had known he loved her.
"Please, answer my question," she begged.
"I love you, Marian, I love you so much that I hate myself for it," he told her at last.
Marian breathed heavily. His eyes were gazing at a spot somewhere between her hands and the floor. She lifted up his chin and his eyes met hers. How had she never seen this before?
"I want to stay with you and Allan here. I'm not going back to the castle" she announced.
"No" he said simply.
"But Guy..."
"Never mind ' But Guy '. I've just told you this is not a suitable place for a Lady"
"You're just being stubborn," she retorted.
"Oh, so you are the sensible one here? " Guy queried. "Someone sensible who came riding to the forest late at night in a white cloak; and asking to live in a small space with two men who are officially outlaws ? "
"I have experience with outlaws, remember?" she said. Oh joy, they were fighting again. It made her feel so alive, so full of energy.
"Don't make me repeat myself, please" he said, holding tight to her wrist. "Now stop talking such foolishness and remove that cloak."
"Now?" she asked obvious question, fearing he would laugh at her when... He removed her cloak himself."Lay down, I'll be here right away."
He collected all her things and put them near the bed of leaves. Marian was unsure if the chest was still there. She hadn't had a moment to check up after the fall.
A few seconds later, Guy was lying beside her, her back against his chest, his arms around her body.
"How are you? Are you feeling better?" he asked.
"Well... It's still freezing out her but I'm feeling a little better. " She was much better that she was afraid to say something that might spoil the magic of his arms holding her.
"I promise you don't have to endure this for very long. I'm just trying to warm you up." he explained, his voice sounded uncertain and filled with shame.
"Guy, please don't be angry with me for what I'm about to say."
"That usually means I'm going to be angry for certain; but go on, " he said.
"Why don't you want me here? " she asked.
" I mean, I just want to be with you. You are the only people I can trust. You and Allan."
"And Robin." he added.
"Robin is not here and you are... Both of you" she said.
She could feel his arms relaxing around her and her body felt the heat that came from him. for the first time ever she understood the words "delicious torture".
"You still haven't answer my question" she remarked. "Why do you want to get rid of me?"
"It's not that straightforward, Marian," he insisted.
" I believe that the forest is not the right place for someone like you. You are a lady. I believed that when you were with Hood and I still believe it now.
It's not a matter of who you are living with in the forest; but the fact that you are not made to live this kind of life."
He was speaking so calmly that she totally caught him off guard when she turned around and faced him. Her mouth was just a few inches from his chest.
"Marian, please, turn back round" he pleaded.
"We are talking Guy and I don't want you to talk to my back."
"You are a nightmare, you know that don't you ? " he sighed.
Marian smiled and kissed him on in his cheek. "I was wondering if that last kiss you gave me was a dream...and it wasn't, "
she said before trying to kiss him in earnest . He tried not to respond to her but...
She put her hand on the back of his head and drew him closer.
How could he resist something he'd desired for so long?
He didn't understand what was happening; but he was sure that this time it wouldn't be him who broke the spell.
This is it. Marian thought happily as she realized he was not going stop her this time.
Her father probably would be ashamed of her wanton behaviour; but it was as clear as day that Guy wasn't about to make a move.
He'd been rejected so many times before. She'd humilliated him a thousand times and betrayed him at every step of their history as a couple. Small wonder that he was in no mood to woo her again.
She had goose bumps all over her body. She couldn't even think properly right now. He was kissing her good and proper for the very first time.
It felt like she was walking on air, with the ever-present fear of falling... His hand was caressing her back and he whispered her name over and over again like a prayer.
It was such an overwhelming feeling that she couldn't help but cry.
"Marian... " he stopped as soon as he heard her. " Are you alright? I mean... You...You kissed me! "
His eyes were confused, as if he had done something wrong. "Did I..?"
She cut him off. "I'm fine," she whispered;
" I wanted to kiss you. I still want to."
"Then why are you crying?" he asked in bemusement.
"I don't know," she tried to put it into words; " I was feeling too much. Is it that possible?"
Oh yes; it is, he thought.
That was the way he felt every time she showed some little shreds of affection to him.
This was so very different. This was not affection or pity or being friendly.. Could it be true? Could she be feeling something deeper for him?
He didn't dare to use the word "love" , not when she was betrothed to Hood.
"What are you doing, Marian?" he whispered; he nuzzled in her neck and felt the temptation to nibble her little ears. "What are you doing to me?"
