G/M - One more lie - Chapter 10

Nov 30, 2009 00:01

Hello! Yay! It's me!! It's been a very looooong time, (so much that I don't know if you are still interested in this nonsense I'm writing here). I'm not bothering you with my problems or the dreadful time I've been having lately. Let's say I was not in mood for writing or anything that requires more than two minutes of my full attention and I was having a break. Knowing that RH ended and in quite a way, I'm probably already late for everything that could tempt you into reading.
I'm a little out of track so if I missed something or there are some gaps in the storyline, please let me know. It's been a long time and I don't know where I was going then. Thanks for reading (after all this time) and reviewing.
A few more chapters are already in the works so it's not gonna be long till you hear from me again. Just the time for my wonderful beta amandajane17 to breath between chapters. Thanks, AJ!

A fast recap: Just a quick clue - This fic is the one with Guy's diary scraps in a chest. :P
Marian has finally written a letter to Robin explaining she has feeling for Guy. Evil Sheriff and even more Evil Winchester, junior are plotting to poison the lady and set her into a marriage trap. Allan is upset since Sarah is not very cooperative on the love thing and leaves him no hopes to get her heart. No chest found either yet so he's really really disappointed about Guy not trust him into its content or the reason to retrieve it.

Marian had done a lot of thinking and decided to pay a night time visit to the forest.Things were kind of interesting at the castle and she sensed those two fiends from Hell were up to something. Maybe she could put the waiting to good use and concoct a good excuse for the visit.

"God knows I need a good one " she said aloud to herself.

" A good one of what, milady?" Sarah asked as she finished tidying up the rooms.

"Nothing. I was just talking to myself " Marian replied. "Have you seen any of Allan today?"

"No, not really" she answered a bit annoyed by the question. "And why should I?"

"I believe you and him... Well, you were making friends, Sarah"

"A friend that could lose me my job; I do not need. Not to mention the fact that he's an outlaw!"

"Allan is a good man, Sarah," Marian told her. " One who had the misfortune to be born in the lowliest of conditions; but who is brave enough to fight for what he believes in... That should make you proud of his friendship if not his love. "

"And what about those who are already high born ; but aim to buy themselves an even higher position ?  What about getting what you want from life no matter who or what you must trample over on your way to the top, milady? Is it that right too?" Sarah said in anger.

"I know you are talking about Gisborne, " Marian answered; " and in this life things are rarely simple black or white. There are many shades of grey in between. Sometimes you need to stop and take that in consideration before judging someone as wrongly as I did with Sir Guy."

"You love him, that's why you never think anything ill of him" Sarah retorted.

"No," Marian said; " I love him in spite of all the ill I have thought of him, all the wrong in his past and..."
"And? " Sarah prompted. She was moving closer to Marian as the conversation went on.

"... all that I have done wrong myself." Marian stopped for a second. "It's the first time I've ever voiced that aloud. I always did always know somehow but.. "

"That relationship has no future, milady, " Sarah said. " He's a fallen man and he will be hang as soon as the King returns."

"Not if I can do something about it." Marian said with half a smile.

"What are you going to do, Lady Marian?" Sarah begged.

" Please, don't get yourself into trouble for him. You've almost died recently as it is. "

"I really like you, Sarah: but I see you want to be part in this and I respect that, so I will say no more about it. All I ask is for you not to betray me. "

"I will never do that, milady," Sarah told her.

" I'm so sorry to talk to you in such a manner; but... Allan is not the one for me. I know he's not."

"Only your heart knows that, " Marian told her; " and I'm sure it already have a suitor so.. You just need to ready to embrace love when it comes. "

In the forest, Guy was trying to deal with a new situation of his own.
Long ago he had fooled himself into believing that Lambert, Vaisey and even Marian were his friends; but the truth was he had never had a friend before.
Allan was his first and he was proving himself to be a very good friend indeed; so why could Guy not trust him completely?

"You could be betrayed", a voice inside him said. "He went back to Robin last time, how do you know he's not doing it again"

"Allan, come and sit here, please" he asked in a whisper while watching Allan sorting some kind of meal.

"I'm too busy now, Sir Guy," Allan said.

"I've said please..." Guy cajoled him. " That alone should tell you how urgent it is" he stated. "So please again, come here. There's something I need to tell you."

Allan walked reluctantly towards Guy and took a seat opposite him.
" Right, I'm here. What else is there that's worth losing my head for then?"

"We'll talk about that later, " Guy said; " but... I've learnt so much from you this last few days we've shared."

"Whoooooa! Stop there! " Allan said. " There's no trickery here is there ? I mean you're still Guy of Gisborne aren't you ? "

"More Guy than ever, Allan," Guy told him with a grin. " Don't worry I don't feel tempted to start dressing as someone else or anything like that. Can I go on now?"

"One of the many things I've learnt from you is that you must let other people know you care for them; but also let them take care of you...  You trusted me when I told you I needed that chest. You went for it  with no questions asked and, in return, I really want you to know that I trusted you with my life and appreciated your friendship.
It's been hard telling you because I've never had a friend before; but it's getting easier."

" You still scare me, just so you know " Allan said cheekily, but Guy knew it was just to relieve the tension of such an important moment in their new-built friendship and to make things easier for him.

"That chest we are so hard trying to retrieve would have little meaning for the wrong person . It was meant as a gift to Marian on our wedding day. It was to let her know how much and for how long I've been loving her; and will do so for the rest of our lives.
When the wedding went wrong, I kept it as a clear proof of how much she despised me; that was what I told myself at least..." he paused.

"You just couldn't let her go though, could you?" Allan said.

"I loved her," Guy said. " She broke my heart but I love her now more than ever . It doesn't make any sense but... Let's go back to the point here.
>>During Vaisey's incursion into the forest I managed to get hold of something in his possession that could turn England upside down.
It was hidden in his rooms for a long time waiting for the right moment to make it public. Now, with this thing in my hand I was fool enough to believe I was controlling the odd little dwarf.
Once more, I was wrong; but now I've got it hidden safely enough in the last place he'd think to look."

"I don't understand..," Allan said. " You have something the Sheriff wants and he still has a hold on you? How is that?"

"Marian." Guy said.

"Oh, I get it.." Allan said. "She tried to kill Vaisey and he used her against you?"

"You are quick, my friend." Guy said with something close to a smile. "Yes. He said he would spare her life if... and only IF I killed Richard and gave back the document to him. That was all nonsense because the document alone could have replaced King Richard with Prince John.

"Why?" Allan asked again. "What kind of piece of paper can destroy a King and replace him with another?"

"The kind of piece of paper that proves Richard is not the rightful King of England since he was not his father's son"

"King Richard's a barsteward ? Really?" Allan laughed out loud at the idea. "I never thought The Rich King and I would have so much in common."

"Rightful Lord without lands, barsteward son with a kingdom... Life can be funny sometimes, can't it just?"

"Now go on... what's next? Why does Vaisey want you to kill Richard if there's already a way to reduce him to nothing..." Allan asked.

"He's a single-minded barsteward that's why." Guy told him.

" He's never cared about my feeling for Marian and has done everything in his power to keep her away from me. He knows quite well she was the only one who can make me feel like.. "
he paused as the thought of Marian cherishing him was something he had longed for so long. " If I didn't kill the King, I would lose Marian by his hand and if I did..."

"You'd lose her by your own, cause she would never have forgiven you so it was a situation where you could never win." Allan realised.

Around the castle things were oddly calm. Lady Georgia had been messing around in the kitchen. The cook was about to leave because of her unwanted advice about the food; but it all was not as it seemed. Secretly, she was trying to find out the better way to follow her husband's orders with Lady Marian.
All of the sudden she became a protegeé of the crown and Jeffy was most worried about her status in the castle.
On the other hand, that didn't prevent him from allowing Winchester to attempt to kill the saucy wench.

Right now though she has more important things to take care of. The whereabouts of that damned chest which seems to hold the best kept secret in England for one. She'd turned the castle upside down in the search but nothing had come of it.

The only place she couldn't properly search was Lady Marian's bedroom; but soon enough she would find a way to persuade her to let her in there.

"It must be there" she said to herself. "Jeff would kill her if that's the case... If Winchester hasn't done it already by then."

She looked out over one of the balconies; and saw the lady in question as well as the two new best friends in evilness.

Lady Marian hadn't noticed the presence of Winchester or Sheriff . She'd just come straight from the stables where she herself had got her horse ready; in case she needed it at a moment's notice.
The stable boy was very pleased to help gentle Lady Marian and be part of her little conspiracy to help the king and the crown.

The two men avoided Lady Marian as they were very busy plotting her future as Lady Winchester, but Lady Georgia was very conscious of the look both of men dedicated to the lady in question.

"You know what would really make our day? "The Sheriff said to his friend. "We should catch another big bird for the Prince."

"Bigger than his brother or Hood? Bigger than a throne? " Winchester asked.

"We know that both of them means everything for our future king," The Sheriff told him; " but... What if we try and get Gisborne's head on a silver plate?"

"Gisborne is already dead isn't he ? Vaisey killed him at the Holy Land ."

"That's not what I heard. There are rumors he could be here. My guards assure me that there's nothing over there that he cares about more than that lady.

"Then, if that's true... Why is he not here trying to get her back?"

"She's in love with Hood, remember?" Sheriff reminded him.

" It's said that he was a puppet in her little hands, that's why Vaisey was so keen on getting rid of Marian."

"You should watch your personal guards and make sure you have no Gisborne's army rising up just in front of your nose."

"I've already set a escort to follow her day and night. If she's seeing Gisborne we will soon know."

Marian was so busy thinking about the right way to approach Guy that she gave little attention to anything else. She needed an excuse to see him, one he would believe beyond any doubt but what?
There was a time when he would have believed her every word, a time when she would have no need for an excuse to visit him. He would have accepted whatever she had given him then; but no longer...

The man that had adored her was no more. Perhaps it was already too late for them and their chance of love and being loved had slipped away...

"How will I ever live if that's true, she thought.

As she entered the castle, she met Lady Georgia. She was up to something, Marian could that clearly; but what?

"Are you joining us for dinner tonight, milady?" Georgia asked.

"Please do apologize for my absence, " Marian said; " but I am very tired after my stroll and I'm just having a light supper in my rooms."

"I will do so then, " said Georgia; " but please, let me know if you need anything else before I go to bed."

Once Lady Georgia was out of sight; Marian ran to her room and started getting ready.

Sarah was already preparing her bath and night gown but Marian had something very different in mind. She took out one of Guy's shirts out of her chest and some black leggings she had never worn before.

She produced a double buckle belt from one of the drawers and looked for the long hooded white cloak Guy gave to her for the Archery tournament what seemed an age ago now.

She knew that the white hooded cloak was not the best choice for a night ride; but Guy would be as familiar with it as he was with her horse's name.

"Milady, what is all that?" Sarah asked.

"My clothes."

"You are going to sleep with one of Sir Guy's shirts?"

"I'm sure you've already guessed I have no intention to sleep at all tonight, not in this room at least." Marian said with a smirk Guy would have been proud of.

"You cannot be serious? You are going to Sherwood forest in the middle of the night?" Sarah asked in awe.

"Yes, my dear."

"Over my dead body, milady!" Sarah exclaimed. "YOU ARE NOT GOING! AND THAT'S FINAL!!!!"

"Would you please try not to tell the whole castle?" Marian asked nicely at first. "It's good to know you care so much for me but... You are not my father; and not even he could stop me when I set my mind on something so.. I believe I'm going!"

"You don't understand, Miss... If they knew about your little runaways to the woods, your honour would be forever stained and nobody would ever make a proper lady out of you, not even Master Robin." Sarah pleaded.

"Well, I... I don't really care any more," Marian announced.

"But you must! You should! Milady, please... Is he really worth it? " Sarah asked.

" You are not even sure about his present feelings for you. You may risk everything and end up with nothing."

"He's already risked everything for me and ended with nothing but a broken heart, " Marian informed her.

" I need to do something for him in return; so you can save your breath. I'm going no matter what."

"Then I'm going with you." Sarah stated.

"No, you are not, " Marian said firmly. " I need you to stay here and make sure everything's alright for me.
Besides, Allan will surely be there and if you want nothing to do with him. Let's not make things difficult for him... Leave now and come back when the castle is asleep. "

Against her own wishes, Sarah left and Marian was alone for a little while. There was something else she needed for her night trip. Leather Gloves.

A few minutes later she was ready for the ride of her life.
Sarah accompanied her to the West Gate where the stable boy awaited with the horse all ready for her.

"Milady, please.." Sarah begged her. " I'm sure there's some other way. Why don't you sleep on this and think about it again tomorrow with a clear mind..."

"I have no time to waste. Tomorrow it could be too late," Marian told her.

"But you have the chest. He won't leave without it. You said that yourself."

"It's not about his leaving, it's about him not loving me anymore, Sarah... "

"Oh, Miss, please!" Sarah whispered as Marian rode Leather Clad onto the dark path to the forest.
