I received an email this morning from my long, lost host sister from the time I spent in Tashkent Uzbekistan working at Ilkhom Theatre (I can't believe it was 10 years ago this year). While it was fantastic to hear from her, unfortunately the news she had was horrible.
Mark Weil, the Founder and Artistic Director of Ilkhom (EDIT: OK...so I had always been told that is translates to "epiphany" - but all over the news they are saying it is "inspiration"), was attacked and murdered in the lobby of his apartment building last night, the night before the opening of Ilkhom's 32nd Season. He was rushed to emergency but they were not able to save him. His last words were "I have opening tomorrow and everything must happen..."
Ilkhom is moving forward with the opening performance of The Oresteia tonight (in fact as I write this they have already completed it) in honor of Mark.
Mark was an amazingly brilliant and passionate theatre artist who was continually pushing the limits of performance and theatrical expression. The time I spent at his theatre and as his student was transformative in every way. Their theatre was my first true experience of "ensemble theatre" - which I am in the process of completing my MFA in right now.
The world was better for his presence in it and I am very grateful I was able to experience his work in my life.
